Why Interactive?
“Effective instruction involves task based learning
that activates prior knowledge, demonstrates the
skills, a learner applies the skills, and then
integrates the skills.”
(David Merill Paper http://cito.byuh.edu/merrill/text/papers.htm)
 Engage Students attention and participation
 Provide cultural and industry relevance
 Individualised choices and feedback
 Challenge students to develop critical thinking
skills
Design and build interactive scenarios that engage learners
The Knowing-Doing Gap
by Jeffrey Pfeffer, Robert I. Sutton
The gap between knowing and doing is more
important than the gap between ignorance and
knowing.
“Talk is not enough, so learning something just by
looking at it on the computer is not enough either…
To the extent that you’re trying to learn something
from eLearning and then apply it in a different or a
more complex way, such as anything from
biochemistry to learning how to lead a group of
people face to face, it doesn’t work very well”

Design Process
•Instructional Design
•Characters/Scenes
•Story/Script
•Interface Design
•Storyboard
1. Plan
•Map all decisions
•Check logic/flow
•Assess Cognitive
load/Challenge
2. Flowchart •Create/source template,
graphics and audio
•Add content
•Link Choices
3. Build
• Ensure all links work
• Fine tune
• Ensure a Quality
Learning Experience
4. Test
1. Plan
 Write a Script that covers the scenario (include characters, setting etc.)
1. Plan
 Create a
rough
storyboard to
help
visualise the
scenario
2. Flowchart
Use a flowcharting
program like
Microsoft Visio,
Mindmeister,
PowerPoint or a
large sheet of paper
3. Build

iSpring ***
Articulate
Storyline
****
Lectora and Adobe Captivate are other options, but I haven’t
tried those yet!
BranchTrack
Create an interactive conversation
easily by defining a flowchart of
possibilities, choosing a character,
background and adding gamification
elements.
• Simple, fast and easy to create
• Professional looking result
• Export to an LMS or use as a link
• Saved in the cloud
• Engaging and interactive
• Teach consequence through
trial and error
• Uses Javascript, runs on iPads
iSpring Suite 7
Add interactivity to any PowerPoint
without leaving the program.
Convert and save the result to an
LMS as an interactive course
• Support all platforms all devices
• Integrates with an LMS
• Responsive design
• Create quizzes and courses
• Character library included
• Create video lectures
• Supports 98% of PowerPoint
features
Articulate Storyline
Create highly engaging interactive
content.
• Supports videos, audio, images and
includes templates and pre-built
content
• Supports importing content from
PowerPoint
• Add a range of quizzes, interactions
and branching scenarios
• iPad and HTML5 support (some bugs)
• Export to an LMS
• Great support community and
resources
Creating Graphics
 Edit existing Clip Art
 Use free or paid image sites
 Use iSpring or Articulate
Characters
 Green Screen Photography
Editing ClipArt
 Ungroup the images
 Remove unwanted elements
 Change colours
 Select the entire image and regroup it.

Image Sites
 Freepik.com
 Flaticon.com
 Pixabay.com
 elearningbrothers.com
 elearningart.com
Audio Sites
 Freesound.org
 AudioBlocks.com
 Ivona.com
Green Screen
Photography
 OLT have an equipped
production room with a
green screen
 We can provide cameras,
lights and expertise to help
academics create characters
4. Testing
 Ensure quality control and
professionalism
 Ensure that students are
demonstrating they can
reach the learning outcomes
 Prevent student stress and
confusion
Build Test
Some Best Practices
Decisions
•Aim for 7 decision
points
Draft and Test
•Test a draft version
as often as possible
with students/
academics
Do Go Back
•Allow students to go
back in a scenario to
rectify a mistake or
explore a different
option
Shades of Grey
•Avoid obvious black
or white decisions,
hard decisions make
students stop and
think about the topic
Controversial
•Use controversy to
encourage
discussion

One Excellent Example
Design and build interactive scenarios that engage learners
Any Easier
options?
Quizlet
A interactive social study tool that enables
students to compete and share lists of
terms and definitions.
• Games automatically generated with
a high scores table.
• Copy and paste any list into Quizlet
• Integrated text to speech tools great
for ESL students
• Mobile version (reduced functionality)
• Paid account includes custom audio,
image uploading and class progress
reports
