DHCP CONFIGURATION FILE Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol that automatically provides IP addresses and other related configuration information such as subnet Mask and Default Gateway to the hosts connected to the network. This method is efficient and convenient for large networks with many hosts ,as the process of manually configuring each host is quiet time consuming. By using DHCP one can ensure that every host on your network has valid IP address ,Subnet Mask,Broadcast Address and Default Gateway. DHCP server should be configured for each of the subnet. Each host on subnet needs to be configured as DHCP client. A dhcpd program is to be installed on server.
- 3. DHCP CONFIGURATION FILE While installing select network servers and install the package. The configuration file for DHCP Server is /etc/dhcpd.conf. Contents of a file: • #the amount of time in seconds the host can keep the ip address Default-lease-time 36000 • #domain name of dhcp server • #name server Option domain-name “abc.com” option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.1

DHCP CONFIGURATION FILE • #Gateway/routers Option routers 1.2.3.4,1.2.3.5 Option routers 192.168.1.1 • #netmask(subnet mask of the network) Option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0 • #broadcast address Option broadcast-address 192.168.1.255 • #specify subnet number Subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
- 5. DHCP CONFIGURATION FILE • #define which address can be assigned or used Range 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.126 • If any changes are done in the file then restart dhcp server by using the command : Service dhcp restart
