Unit 13 Assignment 1 Digital Graphics
In this report I will be analysing digital graphics, what they are and its digital
images and texts that are created and scanned on the computer. Furthermore I
will be looking at how in which this relates to creating graphics and images for
various games that are created across the world. Digital graphics technology is
the types of digital graphics used to create digital images.
Bitmap (Raster)
Bitmap is made up of pixels resolution; it cannot be scaled up without
losing quality.When you resize a bitmap graphic, it tends to lose quality.
Common bitmap programmes: paint, Photoshop.
Common bitmap images: photographs and
paintings.

Vector (Cont.)
Vector is made of points, lines and curves. The image is
built and displayed through mathematical expressions. It
can be scaled (re-sized) and will not lose clarity or quality.
Resolution, independent can be printed at any resolution.
Common file formats: ai, cdr, .ps, .pdfs
Common vector graphics programmes:
Adobe illustrator, CorelDraw, freehand
Factors That Affect Image Quality
There are many factors that affect the quality of an image. One of these crucial
factors is the process of compression. Compression is where you apply
algorithm files that reduce their size. E.g. when someone sends an email and
intends to send a few files they put it in a zip and when the file is sent the
receiver opens the zip to see the files, this is compression.
Capturing Images
There are many different ways to capture an image. Image capture is the
process of obtaining a digital image from a vision sensor, such as a camera.
One of the most common and significant ways of capturing an image in the
modern day is to take a picture with a digital camera but there are also other
forms of capturing image. Another form of image capturing is scanning.
Scanning works many ways e.g. if anyone hand draws something and scans it
to a computer. This cannot be resized and is a bitmap image. Lastly another
form of image capturing is drawing an image digitally as a vector image. This
means it can be resized without losing any quality.
Output
There are two main ways that an image can be outputted yet this all depends
on what type of image this is.
There are different colour styles that different devices use. E.g. printer uses the
colour code of CYMK (cyan, yellow, magneta and black.
RGB (red, green and blue) is a colour model that is in use on computer
monitors.
Storage
The storage means the file size. The file size all depends on the resolution and
the size of the image. The larger the file is the:
Longer it will take to upload and download from your email.
Takes up a larger amount of space on your computer
Harder to email
A Good way of keeping everything in your computer organized and easy to find
is to structure your files in specific folders. This is a convenient way of locating
documents, work and different files.
Conclusion
To conclude this report has contained a lot of information and helped me to
specify the difference of digital graphics like bitmap and vector images and has
also gave me an idea of how they work and pixel structure and what factors
affect the image quality to separate a bitmap image from a vector image. This
will benefit me in the course because it gives me an idea of what type of digital
image to use and when to use each of these. It has also given me other types
of information that will help me in the future e.g. storage.
