 Digital Editing used to be complex and expensive
 Now there are a number of editing tools available.
 Photoshop (most known and powerful, can be complicated)
 Instagram (easiest and most ubiquitous)
 Pixlar (free and online, user friendly)
 Built in to many larger apps (Apple Photos, Facebook, etc)
 Free online storage of photos with editors: Google, Picasa, etc

Selecting an image…
 Keeping with the theme of the course, you will want to
choose an image that relates to your major or future career,
or one that highlights the professional editing you are
capable of doing.
 This might be an image you use for a lesson, an icon or
banner that you create for a business or social cause you
start, and so on.
 It can also be a your property, meaning that you took the
image yourself, you purchased the image, or you have
Creative Commons rights to use the image.
Photo Editing Basics
These steps will be the same across most photo editing
software and packages
Pixlar web-based app
 For this project, we will be using Pixlr.com to edit a digital
image of your own.
 If you know how to use a different photo editor then go ahead
and use that one.
Panels
 Navigator panel- Displays a miniature version of your image,
in its default position at the upper right-hand area of the
image screen. Use the Navigator panel to zoom in and out
and find your way around the photo.
 History panel- Shows each step you’ve done. Click on a
previous step to go backwards if you’ve made a mistake.
 Tools panel- Has a collection of tools to edit. Each can be
changed with such as brush size, style, opacity percentage,
blending mode, etc.
Layers
 Allows you to work on different parts and pieces without
touching the others.
 Use the Layers panel to make, select, edit, and rearrange
layers of adjustments to your original image.
 Many of the changes you make to your photo (including
adding text, apply filters, and pasting other images) will
automatically appear as new, individual layers.
 Pay attention to the Layers window and scroll to pick the right
level to edit.
 Background layer is automatically locked, unlock to edit.

Editing you will do…
 The image will be CROPPED
 The image will be RESIZED to a width of no bigger than 800 pixels
 Change at least one of the options under ADJUSTMENT menu
 Change at least one of the options under FILTERS menu
 Add a new layer - SHAPE
 Add a new layer - TEXT to include your name or initials, or Creative
Common’s License.
 Add a new layer – YOUR CHOICE (cut out from image, combine 2
images, additional adjustment you feel would improve image, etc)
 Submit Digital Photo Editing Changes-Made form
 Follow the C.R.A.P. principles, and make sure all is free of grammar
and mechanical errors, Appropriate meaningful content.
