1. What is a dimension?
Dimensions are used to show the size,
location, orientation, form or other geometric
characteristics of a part.
Dimensions are written on the lines called
dimension lines

Dimensioning Rules
Rules of dimensioning
1. Every aspect of drawing should be dimensioned in a way that it can be reproduced.
2. No dimension should be repeated. Avoid unnecessary dimensions.
3. One dimension line should not go over another dimension line.
4. Extension line should touch the line to be dimensioned.
5. As far as possible, dimension should be placed outside the main diagram.
6. Under no conditions dimension should be placed below the dimension line.
7. For narrow portions, dimension line can be extended beyond extension lines.
8. Symbols should always precede the number.
9. Dimensions should not have units with the number.
10. Extension should be taken from visible and not from hidden or dashed lines.
