Assignment #4B: Percentage Discounts
1
Lesson Plan Outline
Introduction
• Lesson Topic: Percentage discounts, percents, ratios and proportions.
• Length of Lesson (estimated): 90 Minutes
• VA Standards of Learning: 8th
grade math, 8.3. The student will solve practical problems
involving rational numbers, percents, ratios, and proportions. Problems will be of varying
complexities and will involve real-life data, such as finding a discount and discount prices
and balancing a checkbook.
Cognitive Objectives
• Students will relate mathematics problems to daily life.
• Students will identify and use appropriate methods for computing with rational numbers
and percents according to the context of the problem.
• Students will produce a proportion given the relationship between two items.
• Students will solve practical problems by using computation procedures for whole
numbers, integers, rational numbers, percents, ratios, and proportions.
• Students will compile a checkbook and check registry for four transactions.
• Students will compute a discount and the resulting (sale) price for one discount.
Materials/Technology and Advanced Preparation
• Microsoft Powerpoint or similar program, loaded with attached presentation.
• TI-83 (or similar) graphing calculators for each student.
• Projector to show Powerpoint presentation.
Assignment #4B: Percentage Discounts
2
• Rational Numbers worksheets for all students.
• 2 decks of standard playing cards.
• 5 copies of check worksheet for each student.
• Checkbook registry worksheet for each student.
• 5 Checkbook registry worksheets printed on overhead sheets.
Teaching and Learning Sequence
Introduction/Anticipatory Set (15 minutes):
• Hand out Rational Numbers worksheet. Students have 8 minutes to complete worksheet
and ask relevant questions to review fractions, decimals and percentages.
• While students complete worksheet, hand out two playing cards to each student.
• After students finish worksheet, get in groups of four.
• Ask a series of proportion questions (see content organizer). Students answer in groups.
• While students answer questions, set up Powerpoint presentation.
Lesson Development (60 minutes):
• Using Powerpoint, explain the activity.
• Explain how to write a check.
• Divide students into groups of 4 to work on the first part of the assignment (see
Powerpoint).
• Explain discount as a dollar amount off of the total price.
• Explain discount rate as a proportion of the total price.
• Explain discount price as the original price minus the discount.
Assignment #4B: Percentage Discounts
3
• After explanations, give each group of students a different percentage discount to deal
with. Students make proper computations as a group and decide whether they would buy
a new mower or fix the old mower.
• Students write an appropriate check to ‘The Mower Store’ if they choose to buy a new
mower.
• Students write an appropriate check to ‘Moe’s Lawn Service’ if they choose to fix the old
mower.
• Students update check registry accordingly, and calculate the ending balance for the
company.
• Select one student from each group to present their registry to the class (students write on
overhead sheets preprinted with the registry format).
• Discuss which group had the most money at the end of the exercise and why.
Closure (15 minutes):
• Exit Ticket:
o Have students explain in two sentences why different groups had different ending
balances on the checkbook registry.
o Have students explain the difference between a discount/discount rate and a
discount price.
Homework
See attached worksheet: Proportions.
Assignment #4B: Percentage Discounts

Assessment
Formative - The second part of the anticipatory set involves students producing a proportion
given the relationship between red and black playing cards (third objective). Furthermore,
students must fill out checks and checkbook registries representing their computations.
Students are completing work as if they were the owner of a lawn care service, relating the
problems to work students may have done at one point (first objective). Throughout the
lesson, students solve an extended practical problem using numbers, integers, rational
numbers, percents, and proportions (fourth objective). Students compile a checkbook and
check registry for at least four transactions during the lesson (fifth objective). Finally, when
dealing with the problem of the broken lawnmower, students compute the discount and
resulting sale price for the lawnmower (sixth objective).
Summative: – During the lesson, students must complete a worksheet as the anticipatory set. This
worksheet will allow the teacher to determine how much students already know (or
remember) about proportions (second objective). The check worksheets and the checkbook
registry ensure student understanding of the material, but also offer the teacher an
opportunity to check students computations (fifth objective). Finally, the homework
assignment covers solving proportions and determining whether proportions are equal.
