Diuretics work by inhibiting sodium reabsorption in the kidneys, which leads to increased sodium and water excretion in the urine. There are three main types of diuretics: loop diuretics that inhibit the Na-K-2Cl symporter; thiazide diuretics that inhibit the Na-Cl symporter; and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists that block aldosterone's effects and include spironolactone and eplerenone. Diuretics are used to treat fluid retention, high blood pressure, and other conditions.
