Introduction
As the director of Amvara Consulting, I am pleased to present “Open Code, Open Mind”, a documentary short
film project that explores the transformative impact of the Open Source movement on our society. Since
2011, Amvara, based in Barcelona and specializing in the management and creation of IT systems and projects,
has worked to build a more inclusive and collaborative digital ecosystem. This initiative to create a short film
seeks to extend that vision, showcasing how the values of openness and cooperation inherent in Open
Source can inspire new ways of collaboration across all fields.
For those unfamiliar, Open Source is a philosophy that promotes transparency by making software
source code publicly available, enabling anyone to study, modify, and improve it. This approach, rooted in
openness and collaboration, drives collective innovation where people from anywhere in the world can
contribute to technological evolution.
“Open Code, Open Mind” aims to raise awareness of this movement by bringing together testimonies from
programmers, activists, educators, and thinkers who illustrate how Open Source values can foster a more
equitable and collaborative future.
Through these shared stories, we hope to inspire new generations to envision a more cooperative and
accessible future. That’s why we invite those who share this vision to join us as interviewees, collaborators, or
sponsors, helping to bring this message of positive change to a broad audience.

The transformative power of Open Source in the digital age
Open-source software has had a profound impact in the digital age, as its principles of transparency and
collaboration are driving significant changes in various fields. Unlike closed-code tools or proprietary
platforms that limit participation and innovation, Open Source stands out for its ability to open doors to
knowledge, foster co-creation, and promote shared growth. It advances values such as equity and
cooperation, which are essential for a more inclusive and sustainable future.
This documentary short film project aims to demonstrate how the Open Source movement is driving
technological advancements while also fostering a more inclusive and accessible vision for everyone.
Through the experiences and testimonies of about six professionals from diverse fields and contexts
(programmers, educators, and thinkers) we will showcase the achievements and challenges of this philosophy,
illustrating how open access and cooperation have enabled significant strides in innovation and social
change. Each story will highlight the passion and commitment of those embracing Open Source values,
projecting this vision beyond the technological sphere into social and philosophical applications.
The documentary seeks to create an interconnected narrative through various testimonies, emphasizing the
value of collaboration in answering questions and solving problems. This will be complemented by visuals of
Open Source tools, graphics, and animations that explain technical and philosophical concepts in an
accessible way. Each visual resource will be carefully integrated to strengthen the message and facilitate the
understanding of the ideas presented.
This approach aims to demonstrate how the philosophy of Open Source not only addresses current
challenges in technology, education, and social justice but also represents a way of thinking and
collaborating capable of building a more equitable and sustainable future. In a world that is increasingly
interconnected, Open Source inspires us to rethink access to knowledge and embrace a less
individualistic, more collaborative model that prioritizes the common good.

Objectives of the documentary short film
Showcase the diversity and potential of Open Source communities: Explore how individuals and
organizations from various fields contribute to the Open Source movement, highlighting its ability to solve
problems and generate innovative solutions made possible through collaboration and the exchange of
knowledge.
Reflect on the impact of Open Source on contemporary society: Analyze how Open Source transcends
technological transformation, affecting social, economic, and political dynamics by promoting values of
transparency, freedom, and cooperation. These values are presented as key tools for addressing current
challenges in a more equitable and sustainable way.
Foster dialogue about the power of collaboration to create impactful solutions: Open a conversation on
how collaborative tools and platforms can lead to creative and transformative solutions with tangible impacts on
daily life, from education and social justice to sustainability.
Invite participation and collaboration to enrich the project: Inspired by Open Source values, we aim for this
short film to be a shared experience. We seek collaborations in proposing creative ideas, participating in
interviews, and supporting the production of the film (music, editing, design, etc.). We also invite organizations to

Examples of Open Source projects
Currently, there are thousands of open-source projects in operation, and their number continues to grow thanks
to the global collaboration of developers, companies, and communities. These projects cover diverse areas
such as operating systems, web development, artificial intelligence, data science, and much more.
Below are 10 open-source projects that, in addition to their technological impact, have been fundamental in
democratizing access to knowledge and innovation:
Linux – An operating system used in servers, supercomputers, and mobile devices.
Android – A mobile operating system based on Linux, developed by Google.
Apache HTTP Server – One of the most popular and widely used web servers on the Internet.
Mozilla Firefox – A web browser that promotes privacy and security.
MySQL – A database management system used by major web platforms.
WordPress – A CMS for creating and managing websites, used by over 40% of websites.
VLC Media Player – A multimedia player compatible with almost all formats.
Git – A version control system that facilitates collaborative development.
TensorFlow – A machine learning library widely used in artificial intelligence.
Kubernetes – A platform for managing and orchestrating containers in applications.
These projects not only represent technical advances but also reflect the transformative power of Open Source
software in our society.

Interview details
To create this documentary short film, we will base it on interviews with approximately six professionals from
diverse fields and contexts, such as programmers, educators, and thinkers. The goal is to learn from their
experiences and invite reflection.
Format: The interview will be conducted as an open and natural conversation. There will be no strict scripts, only
guiding questions to allow your story and vision to flow authentically.
Duration: Approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
Location: We will accommodate what is most convenient for you. We prefer to record in an environment related
to your work or a space where you feel comfortable. Alternatively, we can adapt to a location of your choice.
Preparation: No prior preparation is necessary. We want the conversation to be spontaneous and natural. If
you prefer, we can provide an outline of the topics that will be covered.
Recording: We have a professional team to ensure the best recording quality while making the process smooth
and respectful.

Conceptual and aesthetic development
This documentary short film employs, as its conceptual foundation, Plato's allegory of the cave (Fig. 1) as a
metaphor to reflect on the challenges and opportunities presented by new technologies and how
programming code can serve as a tool to create and share knowledge. Due to its symbolic depth and
enduring relevance, Plato's allegory of the cave is an inspiring metaphor that invites us to question our
certainties and seek a more authentic understanding of the world.
Just as the shadows on the cave wall represent a limited and mediated version of reality, code shapes the "digital
reality" we consume (Fig. 2). However, when it is understood and mastered, code can be a medium for deeper
comprehension—a process akin to leaving the cave and stepping into the light of knowledge. In this context,
Open Source symbolizes shared access to this light, allowing knowledge to become collective, transparent, and
universal instead of confined to new private "caves." Open Source democratizes knowledge and fosters
collaboration, helping to build a more inclusive and equitable digital world.

With a dynamic visual narrative combining personal interviews with archival or recreated footage, the
documentary will employ graphics and animations to make the concepts accessible and engaging.
In developing the teaser, trailer, and even sections of the short film, we have begun exploring resources to
strengthen the integrated values, dynamize the narrative, and enrich the audiovisual experience.
Modern morphing techniques using artificial intelligence can effectively link and transform images, from
abstract to concrete. This visual resource would illustrate the fluidity and interconnectedness between
elements, emphasizing how the transformation and fusion of seemingly disparate ideas can give rise to
innovative concepts. The forms evoke transformation and interdependence, representing the constant
flow of change, fusion, and collaboration. This resource is not only aesthetically valuable but also reinforces
the conceptual idea of transformation and evolution inherent in open technologies.
This expressive visual tool reinforces the idea of duality and openness—from the internal to the external. This
visual progression moves from closed and hidden states toward openness and exposure, progressively
gaining light and color.
Visual examples (Fig. 3) illustrate transformations from abstract to tangible. For instance: Flat geometry evolves
into three-dimensional forms. Organic spheres expand and transform into streams of code or numeric
sequences.
