What is ‘Superfast Broadband? …. different definitions circulate Digital Britain report: “ Ambition to develop faster than 2Mbps broadband over time” European Union: “ The 2020 target is internet speeds of 30 Mbps for all European citizens, with 50% (…) subscribing to 100Mbps or higher” EU commissioner of Digital Agenda: Neelie Kroes (NL) Swedish Broadband Strategy: “ In 2015 40% and in 2020 90% of all house-holds and businesses have access to min. 100 Mbps .”

Impact of the Digital Age What can it bring to my community? Communication in the digital age comes in the form of voice , email , text , photos , video , web-links , and social networking platforms .
How to deploy these new services? Upgrade the access network!

Berkel & Rodenrijs Rural FTTH development in The Netherlands Berkel & Rodenrijs , is a small town close to Rotterdam in the western Netherlands. The municipality has a population of 23,000 and covers an area of 18.91 km² (7.30 square miles) of which 0.29 km² (0.11 square miles) consists of canals and waterways. This small Dutch community completed a successful fiber optic rollout to 6,000 homes.
FTTH deployments must focus on TCO reduction… …utilize the existing knowledge and experience to make smart decisions

Editor's Notes

  • #4: 2 main thoughts: As individuals we are greatly dependent and reliant on digital communication in our daily lives -Our lives as individuals are driven and influenced by our demands for instant communication, entertainment, access to information, & digital media. 2) This same influence affects us as a society as a whole -News, politics, economics, social interactions, information streams, and much more have shifted to digital platforms that rely heavily on a reliable network.
  • #5: Take two examples: Quick download MP3 song Download: HD-DVD movie
  • #6: First version, shown in FTTH Council Conference Lisbon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIFYPQjYhv8 Refreshed version, 5 May 2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFZ0z5Fm-Ng&NR=1
  • #8: The backbone has already been upgaded to 40Gbps / 10 Gbps – ALL FIBRE!!! Anecdote: Now Broadband is like driving on a newly paved Highway at 100 Mph – but if you want to stop over for a nice pint of Guiness in a local pub you take an exit and drive on a bumpy dirt road to get your beer.
  • #9: Link to the Business Case; YOU need connect to people that have experience – VALUE FOR MONEY! Based on innovation! We are only focusing on the Passive layer! All layers of the Telecom network must work together to provide end- user satisfaction. This translates to the need for innovations on all network layers . Each network layer relies heavily on the layers below
  • #10: We have done this before – what are our bottle necks / Aerial: Scand. Duct: / Riser/
  • #11: Operators need to define what they expect from a network: Low latency? Large bandwidth? Reliability? …then choose the technology to fulfill the need! P2P/PON, FTTC/FTTH etc. Network operators are cost driven: Focus must be on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) -Use network modeling & software to choose the best network (cabling) concept to fit your requirements and the environment - There is no single “best” solution, but you need to compare solutions to find the best fit for each scenario
  • #12: New is the ‘one-click interface’ to any customers database!!! For a free demo go to our booth in the breaks.
  • #18: Turn-key solutions are the ultimate way for savings in the passive network. Gives the ability to plan and design the network in stages to offer cost savings and overall smart planning. Innovations in passive network make deployments more effective while reducing the CAPEX and OPEX
  • #19: Add the subscriber rate – Business Case: xx p.month (Reggefiber pricing) – Town picture / Farm picture!!
  • #20: We talked about: Broadband and the influence of Social media Three layers of Telecoms and the Passive layer Total Cost of Ownership – and TCO reduction Experiences around Europe & Middle East Draka has practical experience in successfully building passive networks! There is no one solution to fit all – need smart solutions!
