changes in mood,
awareness, thoughts ,
feelings or behavior.
Nomenclature of drug —
 The term drug nomenclature implies that there are
several names that can be used to identify a drug.
 Drug have three different names —
1. Chemical Name
2. Non-proprietary Name
3. Proprietary Name
Chemical Name
 These are given according to chemical constituent of the
drug.
 Chemical –
1. Gives exact chemical composition of the drug.
2. Places atoms or molecules structure.
 But this methods of nomenclature is not suitable for use in
prescribing the drug.
 Example – Acetyl salicylic acid
Non-proprietary name -
 It is assigned by the United States Adapted
Name (USAN) council. It is uniform all over the
world.
 Generic Name-
1. Typically derived from chemical name.
2. Usually shorter
 Example – Aspirin
Proprietary Name –
 It is given by the pharmaceutical manufacturer.
 Trade Name :-
1. Name registered by the manufacturer
2. The first latter of the name is capitalized and Trade mark
symbols R(®).
3. Some drug may have several trade names ( depending on
number of manufacturers.
 Example – Ecosprin
Example – Paracetamol
Chemical Name Non-proprietary Proprietary
N-(4-
hydroxyphenyl)
acetamide
Paracetamol PANADOL ,
CALPOL
Broad classification of drug
1. Analgesics – Drugs that relieves pain ( e.g. – diclofenac sodium,
paracetamol)
2. Antipyretic – Drug which reduce fever (e.g.– Paracetamol)
3. Anesthetics – An agent that reduces sensation affecting either
whole body or a particular area ( e.g.– Xylocaine).
4. Antacids – A drug that neutralize HCL acid in stomach (e.g.–
Aluminium hydroxide)
5. Antibiotics – A substance that destroy or inhibits growth of bacteria
and other microorganisms (e.g.– Penicillin, Tetracycline).
6.Anticoagulant – Drug that prevents clotting of blood (e.g.– Heparin)
7. Antidote – Drug that counteracts the effect of a poison or overdoses
by another drug (e.g.– Dimercaprol).
8.Antifungal – A drug that inhibits growth or destroy fungal
organisms(e.g.– Fluconazole).
9.Antimetics – An agent that prevents vomiting ( e.g.– Ondanseton).
10. Antihistamine – Drug which is use for allergic reaction (e g.–
Cetirizine).
11. Antiseptic – A substance that inhibit growth and development
microorganisms without destroying them .(e.g.– savlon).
12. Antitussive – A medical preparation for suppressing cough (e.g.–
Codeine).
13. Bronchodilators – These drugs widen airways in lung (e.g.–
Theophylline , salbutamol)
14. Corticosteroids – Drug used in the treatment of inflammatory
disorders (e.g.– Glucocorticoid , Betamethasone)
15. Diuretics – A drug that increases volume and frequency of urine
(e.g.– Mannitol)
16.Hypoglycemis – Drugs reducing blood sugar level(e.g- Insulin).
17. Sedative – Drug producing sleep(e.g.- Morphine).
18. Antihypertensive – Drug reducing blood pressure (e.g.-
Captopril , Benazepril).
