This document discusses drug nomenclature and classification. It begins by defining a drug as any substance used to prevent, diagnose, treat or relieve symptoms of disease. There are three names used to identify drugs: the chemical name based on composition; the non-proprietary or generic name assigned by the USAN council for worldwide uniform use; and the proprietary or trade name registered by the manufacturer. Drugs are also broadly classified into categories based on their therapeutic use such as analgesics, antipyretics, anesthetics, antibiotics, anticoagulants, and others.
