DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES
(CE)
Time: 3Hours Max. Marks: 70M
Note:
1. Use of IS: 800-2007 code and Steel Tables is permitted.
2. Assume any data suitably if necessary.
PART-A
Answer any ONE question 1 x 28=28M
1. Design a simply supported plated rolled steel beam section to carry a uniformly distributed
load of 40 kN/m inclusive of self weight. Effective span of the beam is 5m.
2. Design a welded plate girder of span 24m to carry superimposed load of 35kN/m. Avoid use of
intermediate stiffeners. Design the cross-section, the end load bearing stiffeners and
connections. Use Fe410 steel.
PART-B
Answer any THREE questions 3x14 = 42M
3. A bracket of 10mm thick is bolted to the flange of ISHB 300@577/m. The eccentric factored
load is 250kN and the eccentricity is 300mm. Using M16 bolts of grade4.6, design the
connection.
4. Design a built-up column with two channels back-to-back having an effective length of 6.5m
and carrying a factored load of 1000kN. Also design the lacing.
5. Design a gusseted base plate for a column of ISMB 400 carrying a factored load of 1500kN.
Assume that the column is supported on a concrete of grade M25.
6. A beam is to span an opening of 9m. It carries a uniform load of 12kN/m. The depth of the
beam is limited to 450mm clear head room requirements. Design the cross section of the beam.
Fe410 grade steel is used.
7. Design I section purlin for a trussed roof from the following data
Span of roof = 10M;
Spacing of purlins along slope of truss=2.5 m;
Spacing of Truss=4 m;
Slope of roof truss=1 vertical, 2 horizontal
Wind load on roof surface normal to roof=1100 N/m2
Vertical load from roof sheets, etc=150 N/m2
