SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING, CUSAT
M Tech (PT) Second Semester Internal Examination – Dec 2014
CEC 3204a EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT DESIGN OF STRUCTURES
Time: 45 min Marks : 20
Make reasonable Assumptions wherever necessary.
All questions carry equal marks.
Answer any two questions. IS : 1893 , IS:13920 codes permitted.
1 a) State the difference between static and dynamic loads.
b) Explain how capacity based design derived its name with reference the
procedure adopted.
c) Calculate the seismic force distribution along height for a 5 storey railway
station building at New Delhi with following data.
Building height : 3.5 x 5 =17.5 m. Soil : medium ; Base width = 25 m ; Total
DL floors & roof = 12500 kN ; Total LL on Floors = 5000 kN ; Total LL on
Roof = 1875 kN.
2 a) State the usual range of damping of a metal frame structure.
b) What are the different types of analysis that can be done to evaluate
seismic load on an RCC framed structure.
c) Explain the procedure to conduct a response spectrum analysis.
3 a) Name various tests used in earth quake resistant design of structures.
b) What are the different types of seismic tests conducted on a civil
engineering model ?
c) Calculate the area of bar cross section of bar forming lateral ties to be
used as special confining reinforcement of the column with Diameter =
600 mm , Nominal cover = 40 mm, Mix M 30 Steel Fe 500 reinforced with
8 nos of 16 mm dia bars spread equally along periphery.
4 a) What is the property of a structure that is linked to the serviceability?
b) Define inter storey drift and over all drift index of a structure.
c) Sketch typical beam and column sections and mark the lap zones, zones of
special confining reinforcement.
