Geomorphology and Historical
Geology
Geomorphology
• Geomorphology is the study of landforms and the processes that
shape them, past and present
• It is the study of evolution and formation of landscapes or landforms
Endogenic processes in geomorphology
• The endogenic process is an internal geomorphic process. The energy
emanating from within the earth is the main force behind endogenic
geomorphic processes. This energy is mostly generated by
radioactivity, rotational and tidal friction and primordial heat from the
origin of the earth.
Exogenic Processes
• The exogenic processes obtain their energy from the gradients
generated by tectonic factors, processes, their corresponding driving
forces and atmosphere determined by the energy from the sun.
• Precipitation and temperature are the two significant climatic
components that regulate different processes.
• Whole exogenic geomorphic processes are covered under a common
term, denudation which means to uncover.
• Weathering, transportation, and erosion are comprised of
denudation.
Geological action by fluvial processes
• Such a fluvial process plays an essential and very significant role in
the weathering of the land surfaces and the process causes the
transportation which is known as fluvial transportation of the rock
debris from higher to lower levels.
• the physical interaction of flowing water and the natural channels of
rivers and streams.
Types of Fluvial Processes
• River form
• Landform
• Aeolian process
• Glacial Process
• Coastal Geomorphology
General principles of stratigraphy
• The principles on which the stratigraphic studies are based include
order of superposition, original horizontality, lateral continuity, cross-
cutting relationships, inclusions, unconformities, fossil succession,
uniformitarianism and catastrophism.
Geological time scale w.r.t. Indian geological
time scale
• India has its own geological eras and periods that correspond to the
standard geological eras of Pre- Cambrian (over 570 million years old),
Paleozoic (245-570 million years old), Mesozoic (65-245 million years
old) and Cenozoic (65 million years old to the present).
