Electric rickshaws have become popular since 2008 as an alternative to auto rickshaws in some cities due to their low fuel costs and less human effort compared to pulled rickshaws. They differ from traditional rickshaws in their load capacity, motor power, and other structural aspects. Electric rickshaws are most commonly used in Asia, especially China, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, where the Chinese versions first appeared. While Bangladesh imports electric rickshaws from China, India began developing their own electric rickshaw designs in the 1990s, and they have grown widely popular throughout the country in recent years.
