- Sandra Cisneros is an American writer and poet born on December 20th,
1954, in Chicago, Illinois. She is the only daughter of seven brother known by
“The house on Mango Street(1984). Moreover, Sandra, during her childhood,
became shy and reserved and could never commit to a lasting friendship or a
relationship due to his father job, an upholsterer that kept his family moving
from city to city.
Plot
- The story is about a girl by the name of Rachel, who is turning eleven.
However, she doesn`t feel this age, but she does feel like a girl from all
different ages below eleven. She explains that she would love to be older so
that she could take her own decisions and really feel like an eleven year old
girl. During this story, Rachel`s vulnerability sentences her to suffer and feel
like a three year old girl. This happened because of her innocence and non
capacity to deny the problem she had to confront.
Characters:
- RACHEL: Childish, mature, not self confident, shy, not popular, innocent,
vulnerable, ashamed, bullied, insecure, weird, sensible, overanalyzed things,
helpless and sad.
- MRS.PRICE: She was Rachel's teacher.
- SILVIA SALDIVAR: She was one of Rachel's classmate. She was also a bully
who made Rachel wear that ugly sweater, which wasn't from her.
- PHYLLIS LOPEZ: She was also one of the girl's classmate. After the class
ended and Rachel had suffered using the sweater, Phyllis, remembered it
was hers. This is why, we can say she is silly.
Tenses
- Simple present: “You don't feel Eleven, not right away”
- Present continuous: “In my head I'm thinking how long till lunchtime”
- Present perfect: “Because she sees I´ve showed the red sweater to the
tippy-tip corner of my desk.”
- Present perfect continuous: “That's when everything I've been holding in since
this morning, finally lets go”
Conditionals:
Type 1: “... Like if the sweater hurts me and it does, all itchy and full of germs that
aren't even mine.”
Type 2: “... And even if it belonged to me, I wouldn't say so.”
Mixed: “If I was one hundred and two I'd have known what to say when Mrs. Price
put the red sweater in my desk.”
Wishes:
1- “Today I wish I was one hundred and two, instead of Eleven”.
2- “This is why I wish I wasn't eleven, because all the years inside me…”
3- “Only today I wish I didn´t have only eleven years rattling inside me like pennies
in a tin Band-Aid box.”
Vocabulary:
Skinny: Is some kind of clothes which is narrow and fitting closely to the body.
Raggedy and old: Not in good conditions.
Itchy: A sensation of the skin causing a desire to scratch.
