This new technology enables to establish a new concept called "electronic-textiles (e-Textiles)", which allows cost-effective and efficient solutions for various applications. In this paper, the main idea is monitoring vital body signs by placing the electronic devices into a garment in a compact way. Among many vital body signs, posture, respiration rate and body activities like walking, running have been monitored. The measurements have been performed with a MEMS based accelerometer which is widely used in many applications. The electronic components have been placed into the fabric to form the ARF-Shirt to monitor vital body signs. Collected data from 10 subjects with ARF-Shirt system have been transmitted by RF transmission and monitored in real-time. After forming the ARF-Shirt, data were collected from subjects and then analyzed with Lab view. The characteristic amplitude and frequency ranges were obtained for each activity. With this project, measuring a vital body sign with MEMS accelerometer, transmitting the data by RF Transmission, signal processing and analysis with Lab view in real-time have been realized.

The system consists of four modules: BUS Station Module, In-BUS Module, BASE Station Module and BUS Stop Module. Equipped with PC and GSM modem, BUS Station Module sends the initialization information containing the bus number and license plate number to In-BUS Module and BASE Station Module using SMS. The microcontroller based In-BUS Module consisting mainly of a GPS receiver and GSM modem then starts transmitting its location and number of passengers to BASE Station Module. BASE Station Module equipped with a microcontroller unit and GSM modems interfaced to PCs is designed to keep track record of every bus, processes user request about a particular bus location out of BUS Station and updates buses location on bus stops. BUS Stop Module is installed at every bus stop and consists of a GSM modem, memory unit and dot matrix display all interfaced to a microcontroller. This module receives buses location information coming towards that stop from BASE Station module and displays the information on a dot matrix display. A per stop statistical analysis is carried out based on the number of passengers and a recommendation report along with this analysis is sent to Punjab Government Transportation Department to have a check on the performance and services offered by transporters to common

No: 8 Designing of RFID-Based Sensor Solution for Packaging Surveillance Applications Abstract In this work, a two-chip battery assisted Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based sensor platform is presented. The radio frequency communication interface is based on the EPC Gen 2 standard. A laboratory setup of the platform has been shown and characterized for a moisture content sensor application. The laboratory setup of the sensor platform has a reading range of 3.4 meters which is in comparison to commercial available Gen 2 tags. The laboratory platform has an average power consumption of 2.1 μW operating at 3 V, which together with a printed battery gives an estimated lifetime for data logging of several years. The proposed RFID platform provides a tradeoff between, communication performance, compatibility with international standards, and flexibility in on-package customization including type and number of sensors. The low-power PIR detectors take advantage of pyroelectricity to detect a human body that is a constant source of Passive Infrared (radiation in the infrared region). The system senses the signal generated by PIR sensor detecting the presence of individuals not at thermal equilibrium with the surrounding environment. Detecting the presence of any unauthorized person in any specific time interval, it triggers an alarm & sets up a call to a predefined number through a GSM modem. This highly reactive approach has low computational requirement, therefore it is well-suited to surveillance, industrial applications and smart environments. Tests performed gave promising results.

The RC car detects lanes through image input from a low-resolution camera mounted at its front. Using an IR distance sensor, the car determines when to stop accelerating once a certain distance between a forward object has been breached. All computations based on sensor data are handled by an MCU. Due to the nature of the input peripherals, especially the camera, this system is extremely time sensitive so that computations had to be optimized as much as possible in order for the car to be able to react and respond with proper movements in real time. In addition, given the limited computational capacity of this 8-bit MCU, our design made use of several computational efficiency strategies.

The hardware of this system includes the single chip C5081F310, wireless receiving and sending chip CC1100 as well as the SIMENS TC35 GSM module. The system software developed in C51 language has the ability of collecting, wireless receiving and sending data, and can send a piece of alarm short message to the user’s mobile phone when some dangerous condition has been detected. Security monitoring systems are popular in home automation, and Zigbee is a new industrial standard wireless sensor networks. This paper introduces an experimental home security monitoring and alarming system based on Zigbee technology, it is capable of monitoring door & window magnetic contact, smoke, gas leak, water flooding, providing simple controls such as turning off the valves, and sending the alarms to the residential area security network etc. The security alarming system is based on Zigbee chip MC13192 and low power consumption micro-controller MSP430F135. A description of the system architecture, circuit principle and the firmware flowchart is presented. The system uses a control key fob for activating and de-activating the alarm easily, supports Web interface so that user can access the system remotely to control, search or review the history record, and offers a LCD panel for simple configuration.

Essentially, the GPS receiver compares the time a signal was transmitted by a satellite with the time it was received. The time difference tells the GPS receiver how far away the satellite is. Now, with distance measurements from a few more satellites, the receiver can determine the user's position and display it on the unit's electronic map. The project consists of a microcontroller which is interfaced with the Gps module, gsm modem and a vibration sensor. for fetching the data from the Gps module. Once the microcontroller senses the strong vibration, it assumes an accident. From the instance of vibration it starts an alarm. For a time period say approx 15 to 25 seconds. If the peoples are safe they should press a emergency switch to stop the alarm. If none of the people fails to press the switch within the specified time. The controller assumes it as an emergency and starts the gsm modem sending the latitude and longitude information to the specified mobile number, by fetching the information from the Gps. The data from the Gps module is obtained at a baud rate of 19200 BPS. With a specified format with various unwanted and mixed strings of data. The microcontroller reads the required data and eliminates the unwanted data. Thus the data fetched is only the latitude, longitude and is displayed in LCD for our reference. The principle involved in this crack detection is the concept of LDR. The LED will be attached to one side of the rails and the LDR to the opposite side. During normal operation, when there are no cracks, the LED light does not fall on the LDR and hence the LDR resistance is high. When the LED light falls on the LDR, the resistance of the LDR gets reduced and the amount of reduction will be approximately proportional to the intensity of the incident light. According to this project, a robot is designed which is made to move all the time. Apart from this, the system also embedded with ULTRASONIC detectors used to detect the obstacle during which the direction of the robot is changed. All the devices such as ULTRASONIC detectors, motor by which robot is made to move are being interfaced to microcontroller which forms the control unit of the project. The existing equipments on the basis of wired nets are automatic wired itinerant monitoring nets, in which the data from detecting nodes are linked to all the transmitting modules via wires. In such a signal transmitting plan, the long transmission lines will generate high cost, long project time and difficult repair work. The wireless sensor network based on Zigbee technology is developed to solve the defects of existing monitoring and alarming system. The amplitude and frequency characteristics of this new vibration acceleration sensor and nonlinear characteristic of output voltage sensitivity were investigated. The least squares approximation method, partition linear interpolation and average value filter methods were employed to carry out nonlinear error compensation of output voltage sensitivity. The experimental results shown that the nonlinear error of output voltage sensitivity can be 0.6% or less than 0.6% after the non-linear error compensation was made. Micro- controller unit (MCU) was used to data logging, and the least squares approximation method was used to carry on fitting a straight line and establish the non-linear compensation data table. Every time 8 points sampling values are collected, which are used to obtain an average value as the actual sampling value, so the unwanted signal can be filtered, the accuracy of the sampling value can be improved.

To fix a laser sensor on a servo actuator, MCU (Micro Controller Unit) can process the feedbacks of the sensor and then control the servo to adjust the direction of the sensor to detect road. Thus the closed-loop control ensures that the system can track the road automatically. Experiments in this paper show that smart cars based on servo detection system can achieve lower tracking error and a higher average speed when compared to those based on fixed sensors. Therefore, the laser-based servo detection system not only improves smart car's speed but also promotes its systemic stability.

A Micro Inertial Measurement Unit ( muIMU) of 56 mm times 23 mm times 15 mm in size is built. This unit consists of three dimensional MEMS accelerometers, gyroscopes, a Bluetooth module and a Micro Controller Unit (MCU). It records human motion information, and, through the analysis of falls using a high-speed camera, a lateral fall can be determined by gyro threshold. A human motion database that includes falls and other normal motions (walking, running, etc.) is set up. Using a support vector machine (SVM) training process, we can classify falls and other normal motions successfully with a SVM filter. Based on the SVM filter, an embedded digital signal processing (DSP) system is developed for real-time fall detection. In addition, a smart mechanical airbag deployment system is finalized. The response time for the mechanical trigger is 0.133 s, which allows enough time for compressed air to be released before a person falls to the ground. The integrated system is tested and the feasibility of the airbag system for real-time fall protection is demonstrated.

The Coast Guard will use the system for general navigation, as well as hydrographic surveying, ice breaker navigation, and positioning buoys or other objects. Following a successful system demonstration validating the concept design, a system has been developed and tested. The ADS navigation system makes use of the full visible satellite constellation. This allows the GPS based attitude determining system to be designated as a primary navigation sensor. Approval for GPS ADS as a primary navigation system can be pursued now that the constellation is complete. The full constellation also allows the optimum satellite constellation to be selected based on the attitude of a platform.
