World War I ended in 1918 with Germany agreeing to an armistice based on President Wilson's 14 Points. The Paris Peace Conference then established the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, which placed sole blame for the war on Germany and imposed heavy reparations. Germany lost territory and was demilitarized under the punitive treaty. Dissatisfaction with the treaty's terms sowed the seeds for World War II as Germany and others felt cheated while the US turned isolationist.
