- 2. Objectives On completion of this lecture you should be able to better create and manage EndNote libraries. We will work on you acquiring the with the ability to: 1. Identify key capabilities of Endnote, and strategies for using Endnote effectively. 2. Find your way around the EndNote program (screens and menus) and learn where to find answers to questions about EndNote. 3. Create EndNote libraries and enter references in them by typing. 4. Search for and add references by connecting to remote databases through the internet. 5. Import references from downloaded files into EndNote. 6. Use EndNote with Microsoft Word to create and format citations. 7. Import different journal’s styles into EndNote original styles.
- 3. How to work effectively? • BE HONEST – Ethics are important • Follow the rules • All aspects of the research should be discussed at the start of the project • Authorship credits should be decided before starting the research • All authors should read and approve the final version

Why should Ethics be observed? • Not observing Ethics is MISCONDUCT • Deception, Dishonesty or Negligence which is not acceptable • Misconduct can have serious implications: • Retraction of article • Debarment of authors • Reporting to Head of institution and Medical Council • Barrier in promotion Module on Research Methodology, Karbala College of Medicine, University of Karbala.8-14
- 6. Paraphrasing The prefix "para-" means similar or helping to do a similar thing. Paraphrasing means expressing an idea using new different words. That is to redefine some of the words in a sentence or use their synonyms.
- 7. The techniques used in paraphrasing do not usually require changing the structure of the sentences, but they do require full understanding and comprehensive grasp of the meaning. Paraphrasing is to keep the original meaning of the text with new rewording.
- 8. Citing and Referencing This is all about acknowledging where you have used the work of others. “Citing” means giving an acknowledgement within the main body of a piece of work. “Referencing” is a broader term which means both giving an in-text citation, and giving a more detailed reference in the reference list (bibliography) at the end.
- 9. Citing and Referencing Why do we need Referencing: 1. Acknowledge the work of others wherever you make use of it. 2. Present these acknowledgements in a consistent way, using a recognised citation system. 3. Include a detailed reference list at the end.

Citing and referencing • You must give a reference whenever you: quote directly from a source, paraphrase, use ideas or material from others, etc. (1) Acknowledging the work of others • This includes all kinds of sources: printed materials like books or journal articles; electronic information like webpages or emails; images, graphs and tables; recorded or spoken information; etc.

Citing and referencing (2) Using a recognized citation system • Always present references in a standard style. • This determines how you write both in-text citations and the reference list at the end. • Whichever system you use should apply throughout your piece of work – do not ‘mix and match’ different referencing styles. • The two most common styles are Harvard (author/date) and Vancouver (numbering).
- 12. Citing and referencing In the Harvard style, the author's surname and year of publication should be quoted in the text. e.g. • "as confirmed by Abrams (1969)" • "as confirmed by another study (Gillespie et al. 1983)”

What is EndNote? • EndNote is a commercial reference management software package, used to manage bibliographies and references when writing essays and articles and it designed to allow researchers to record, organize, and use references found when searching literature for information. It is produced by Thomson Reuters. • EndNote is an annotation placed at the end of a document.

- 15. What can Install EndNote? Follow the same procedures for any software installation in computer. Many versions of EndNote software are available but the most modernize is EndNote X7. EndNote is a bibliographic management software program designed to help individuals store, organize, cite and format bibliographic references • No more writing out and organizing citations by hand • Store all your references, PDF articles, tables, images, & charts in one place • No more consulting a style manual every 5 minutes when you’re writing a research paper or manuscript. The program is available free to download to all UMDNJ faculty, staff and students.

What Can EndNote Do for You? • Organize references including table, charts, & pictures in 1 place • Import or search for references from many databases, including Ovid Medline and PubMed • Easily create & format bibliographies sorted by author, year, subject, or any other term you specify • Properly cite and create reference lists of articles, pictures, tables, etc. in Word documents or other word processors using EndNote’s CWYW feature

- 65. Select & Export References Directly to EndNote from a Database like Ovid Medline Conduct a search in Ovid Medline first. Select the references that you would like to put in your EndNote Library. Then on the search results screen, make the following choices in the Result Manager as shown below:
- 66. Search PubMed from EndNote & Directly Download Results Make sure to use the online search mode (temporary library) so that the results won’t be automatically placed in your permanent library.
- 67. Cite While You Write (CWYW) Clicking “Insert Citation”, a pop-up box will appear allowing you to find the desired citation to insert in the Word document.
- 68. Create a Formatted Bibliography After highlighting the citations and choosing the output style, go to the File menu and click “Export…” and save the file as rtf (Rich Text Format).
- 69. EndNote Web EndNote Web is the web-based version of EndNote. Store up to 10,000 records per user account. Note: You must create your account from a computer connected to the UMDNJ network and login within the network at least once every twelve months to keep your account active.

Why Is EndNote Web Useful? • Easy to use. • Web-based, once created on campus, can be accessible anywhere with web connection. • Ability to collect/import, organize, export and format references. • A good complement to EndNote desktop program and can be transferred to EndNote desktop easily. • Ability to share references with others who have EndNote Web accounts.
