The Science of Planting Seeds
Emma and her brother Max are going to learn
how to plant seeds in their garden. They have all their materials
ready: seeds, soil, water, and small pots.
First, they pull out the weeds from the garden bed.
It’s important to keep the soil clean so that the new plants can
grow better.
Next, they fill the pots with soil and make small
holes in the soil. Both Emma and Max try to make the holes the
same size to ensure the seeds will grow well.
Then, they place one seed into each hole and
cover it lightly with soil. Together, Emma and Max carry the
watering can and gently water the seeds. It’s important to
water the seeds regularly, but never too much, or they might
rot in their place from being too wet.
Finally, they place the pots in a sunny spot where
the seeds can get plenty of sunlight. Sunlight is crucial for
photosynthesis; the process plants use to make their food.
After a few weeks, they see the first sprouts coming
up. Emma and Max feel proud of their work and try to take
good care of their plants every day. They learned that with
proper care and patience, they can grow beautiful plants
together.

USEFUL METALS
Thousands of years ago, stones were necessary for
survival. Early humans used stones, depending on how they
were shaped, as tools or weapons. Without stones, they could
not hunt for food, defend themselves and build structures. They
also used stones to light fire.
After several years, everything changed when
metals were discovered. Metals improved many aspects of
their lives. Up to this day, many of the things that we see and
use every day are made of metal.
Are you familiar with some of them? Let us learn
more about metal!
Iron: Iron is a shiny, sturdy metal that is often used to make tools,
machinery, and structures. Its color is silver-grey. It is the main
component in steel, which is used in buildings, bridges, and
vehicles. When you see a construction site or a car, you are
looking at iron and steel at work! Surigao, Mindanao has the
biggest iron ore deposit in the country.
Aluminum: Aluminum is soft, lightweight and corrosion-resistant,
and is extracted from bauxite ore. Its color is silvery-white. It is
used in many things, like beverage cans, window frames, and
even airplanes.
Next time you sip from a soda can or look out of a window,
think of aluminum! The largest bauxite mine is found in Western
Samar Province on Samar Island.
Copper: Copper is reddish-brown and conducts electricity
really well. It is flexible but tough. It is used in electrical wires,
plumbing pipes, and coins. So, when you turn on a light switch
or drop a penny into your piggy bank, you are dealing with
copper! South Cotabato has the largest copper mine in the
Philippines and one of the largest in the world, too.
Our country is truly blessed with different resources that play
essential roles in our daily lives; from the utensils we use to the
buildings we live in!
Evaluating Learning
Read the story and complete the graphic organizer by
identifying the step-by-step procedure of the experiment.
In a cozy kitchen, Cora and Jun decided to grow
their own crystals. They gathered a glass jar, string, water,
sodium borate powder, and food coloring. First, they boiled
water and mixed it with sodium borate until dissolved. Next,
they suspended a string in the jar and left it overnight. Each
day, they checked for crystal formation. Gradually, colorful
crystals began to form on the string. Excitedly, they watched as
their crystal garden grew. Lily and Ben learned that crystals
form when dissolved substances cool and solidify, leaving
behind intricate structures. Their crystal project became a
shimmering success!
