how both sides would be affected. Through this calculation of pleasures and pains, one could tell

John Stuart Mill, also a British philosopher, modified and expanded on Bentham's principles. Mill's
approach insists on qualitative utilitarianism, which requires that one consider not only the amount

decision between what I believe to be morally right and wrong. Many different factors influence
my opinions on ethics such as my values, culture I grew up in, my family, religious beliefs, and

Since my journey here at Bryant began in September, I have changed so much. Coming here, I
expected certain things such as my study habits, daily routine and friend group to be altered. One
change I was not anticipating making was my approach to ethics. Over the course of the past fifteen

knowledgeable about the different approaches to ethics and have gained insight as to where I stand

now adamant that it is impossible to arrive at a final answer to ethical questions. Learning about the
different approaches to ethics has caused me to see that there can be more than one "right" solution
to ethical dilemmas. Therefore, if an ethical question is raised, everyone will arrive at a different
solution depending on which approach they take.
When faced with a cultural ethical dilemma I tend to take a pluralistic approach. I believe that we
should make an effort to understand cultural differences, but at the same time there are some actions
that are wrong no matter where you are from. I believe that relativism can lead to chaos and that
absolutism is too strict and judgmental. Pluralism helps to create a nice balance between absolutism
and relativism.

What I Have Learned
I feel like this course has affirmed many of the ethical principles I have always held. Although,
this is not to say that I did not learn anything. I think that the questions and situations posed in this
class were indeed some of the harder I have ever seen and had been asked to answer. This by
default only serves to broaden my ethical standpoint and fine tune my ethical compass. But at the
same time I feel that I was not able to answer some of the questions without leaving some kind of
shortfall of one party or the other. I think this speaks to the complexity and density of the
situations we were asked to traverse. On the same token I think in some instances we were asked
to circumvent the rules in order to arrive at the best possible answer for the person involved. While
this, in some cases, can deliver a positive outcome it exposes the provider by eliminating certain
safe guards that are meant to protect both client and counselor. These instance need to be taken case
by case and combine with a certain level of finesse in order to deliver positive results. Although these
situations can arise at any given time the must be carefully weighed out and tread through very
lightly.

I've worked multiple retail stores as well as in a deli. I've worked cash registers, stocked
merchandise, opened and closed departments and supervised other employees. While working in
so many different positions, I had started to notice little things I could have gotten away with
while at work. I also noticed things other employees were doing that were not to the same ethical
standard I hold for myself. I have had more than one opportunity to take money from a cash
register. I have also had many opportunities to take products I didn't purchase. While working in
the deli department of Safeway, I do my best to provide customers with food I would not mind
serving to my own family and friends. I was put in a very uncomfortable position during my
second week of work while in the deli department. I personally witnessed an employee, who has
worked for Safeway over fifteen years, take fried chicken out of our cold case and fry it for a second
time. I had only worked their two weeks but I knew that was unacceptable to serve to our
customers. I had the choice to pretend like I never saw it or bring it to our store managers attention.

Ethics affect every facet of life, especially in a professional community. When a decision is to be
made within a community, the ethical decision is typically that which benefits the most people or
harms the least people. There are some scenarios however, when the correct decision based on a
system of ethics that values doing the right thing is not the decision that leaves behind the least
negative impact on the organization. An organization must decide if it will follow the system of
ethics that Socrates once set out that says a man must do what is right, that he must be a good
man, or if it will follow the system that says do whatever is most beneficial to those involved (The
Ethics of Socrates p54). A scenario of a project manager who wants to push a product into
