What is the ERC?

 Three ERC frontier research grants will be available under Work Programme
2014: Starting; Consolidator; and Advanced Grants
 ERC Principal Investigators will also continue to be able to apply for the Proof of
Concept Grant, first introduced in 2011

 Any applicant whose proposal was evaluated as
category C in the 2013 StG, CoG or AdG calls
may not submit a proposal to the 2014 StG,
CoG or AdG calls.

may not submit a proposal to the 2015 and
2016 StG, CoG or AdG calls.
 Any applicant whose proposal is evaluated as

Open Access Policy
ERC support for open access to the published output of research:
 Requests that an electronic copy of any research article, monograph or other research
publication that is supported in whole, or in part, by ERC funding be deposited in a
suitable repository immediately upon publication
 Open access should be provided as soon as possible and in any case no later than six
months after the official publication date. For publications in the Social Sciences and
Humanities domain a delay of up to twelve months is acceptable.
 Strongly encourages ERC funded researchers to use discipline-specific repositories for
their publications (http://europepmc.org, http://arxiv.org/)
 Open access fees are eligible costs that can be charged against ERC grants, provided
they have been incurred during the duration of the project
 Encourages Host Institutions to cover open access fees of any research publications that
are supported in whole, or in part, by ERC funding, which arise in the period up to 24
months after the end of the project.

Core funding schemes
Starting Grant (StG): nurturing the next generation research leaders.
To support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are starting
their own independent research team or programme.
Advanced Grant (AdG): attracting and rewarding established independent research
leaders.
To support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are already
established research leaders with a recognised track record of research achievements.

Consolidator Grant (CoG): consolidating the next generation research leaders.
To support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they may still be
consolidating their own independent research team or programme.
Applicant Principal Investigators must demonstrate
the ground breaking nature, ambition and feasibility
of their scientific proposal.

ERC Grants – Grant Size
 €1.5M (StG) - possibility of an additional € 0.5M
 €2.0M (CoG)- possibility of an additional € 0.75M
 €2.5M (CoG)- possibility of an additional € 1 M
 100% total eligible direct costs (salaries, equipment, etc.)
 *Financing of indirect costs based on a flat rate of
25% of the direct eligible costs (in FP7 the rate applied
was 20%)

 At least 2 and up to 7 years post PhD (StG)
 11 December 2006 – 11 December 2011
 Over 7 and up to 12 years post PhD (CoG)
 11 December 2001 – 10 December 2006
 Extensions to this period are possible but there are
limits
 The dates above are strictly applied

ERC Starting and Consolidator Grants –
Eligibility – *Changes for 2014*
 Only significant change is with regard to
applicants who hold a Medical Doctor (MD)
degree.
 Applicants with an MD and clinical specialisation
are no longer considered as eligible. They must
present proof of an appointment requiring
doctoral equivalency (e.g. post-doctoral
fellowship, professorship appointment) or a
PhD.

ERC Grants – Reviewer Exclusion
 You can nominate up to three persons to be
excluded from the evaluation of their proposal
 No reason has to be given
 The concerned persons will be excluded from
the evaluation of the proposal assuming that the
ERCEA is still in a position to evaluate the
proposal properly
