social groups?
HOW HAVE WE SHOWN THE
MENTALLY ILL?
Our main character ’Emily Ovittz’(played by myself, Hollie Merrick) is the
orphaned child of her government official parents who were murdered by a
mysterious black figure.
In the opening we show that Emily is suffering from a sleep disorder which
makes her wake up at particular hours in the night to look at worn down
articles and pictures of her parents of when they died and the pictures show
the memories. She is woken up by a nightmare she is having, which leads her
to the church- a place where she seeks as a place of refuge and security as it is
where the were killed. A church also shows a symbol of peace and can help her
free her mind of all thoughts except this one. (this is repetitive because of her
symptom of PTSD) This shows how she cant come to terms with the fact that
her parents got taken from her so early without any explanation.
Emily’s visiting of the church shows her obsession as it is repetitive and shes
on her own so can only share her own thoughts.
WHERE DID WE GET OUR INSPIRATION FOR
THE CHARACTER ‘EMILY OVITTZ’?
We got our idea of the character Emily Ovittz from the character
Logan Lerman who plays Charlie in ‘The perks of being a
wallflower’, who also suffers from PTSD.
This character ’Charlie’ was molested by his troubled Aunt
Helen, every week. After her sudden death in a car crash she was
in when she was young, he blames himself for her untimely
death, which is where his PTSD originates. The time f this death
causes hi to overdoes of illegal substances with cause him to
suffer from blackouts and have frequent nightmares etc- all of
which are symptoms of PTSD.
PTSD was the disorder that we chose as it can have a backstory
and we can link it to her obsession of the parents death and
makes her think of how it all happened.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR ’EMILY’S’
MISE EN SCENE?
The outfit that we chose for Emily was going to be a white shirt and her bed socks. She
sleeps in this bed shirt as it was her dads and she wears it as a symbol of her relationship
with her down and emphasises how she misses him. It also shows the audience how she
woke up in the middle of the night. The color of her pyjamas (white) associates her
character with innocence and purity, this reflects her personality as a whole as she has
been abandoned from a young age and doesn’t deserve the life she’s had by loosing
them.
Emily wear thick bed socks on her feet which also highlights her childlike attributes whilst
also letting the audience known that she’s wearing them as she has just awoken from her
sleep.
Also following the theme of nighttime scene we made sure that Emily (played by Hollie)
had no makeup on and natural hair to show her age and how he wouldn’t be wearing any
kind of makeup in her sleep.
However, we filmed Emily in high key lighting which contrast on the dark night to show a
representation of her innocence and how she is on her own. This could also mean that
she was in a spotlight for the black figure to predatorise.
The prop that we used for Emily was a picture of her and her mother which shows her
HOW HAVE YOU SHOWN STALKERS?
The stalker is a black figure that is after the final ‘Ovitts’
victim of the family – Emily. This shows how the stalker went
through the generations of the family to get the government
official documents which are held by Emily.
Our villain is shown as a black figure that is stalking Emily to
try and kill her. We dressed her all in black to represent the
darkness of the characters personality, we also did this by
putting the figure in the shadows and in low key lighting. We
have put the character in this darker lighting in attempt to
heighten the tense atmosphere and to make the audience
worry about Emily’s safety as he is practically walking in her
shadows and how the figure is in a dangerously close
WHERE DID WE GET OUR INSPIRATION FOR
THE STALKER CHARACTER?
We got our inspiration for this mysterious black figure from
the character of Bill in ‘Kill Bill’.
We got this idea because Kill Bill is a film that is produced in
black and white. It begins with footsteps as he walks over to
‘The Bride’, on the floor. We imitate this by never showing
the stalkers identity to keep her identity a mystery, this
creates more suspense for the scene and shows that it will
be revealed eventually.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR ‘THE
STALKERS’ MISE EN SCENE?
Following the codes and conventions of a typical thriller movie,
we dressed the villain of our thriller in all black and filmed in
low key lighting to emphasise their dark personality. Leading
from this, using our lighting effectively, we created shadows for
this character to show the audience that ‘the black figure’
bought a never-ending sense of impending doom with her.
The use of these shadows also links to how we named our film
‘SHADOW’, which we chose as a euphemism for ‘stalker’ as the
villain constantly follows and re-enacts the behaviour of Emily
in order to hunt her down).
We got the inspiration of this character from the film Fatal
attraction which also has a woman stalker in. We decided to go
