RESEARCH
I covered a range of music videos which allowed me to
see different shot types, angles, genre conventions,
editing techniques and how they can be used. This also
allowed me to think about the way I wanted my music
video to be. I created a small list of potential songs for
me to use. This was helpful because when I decided what
genre I was doing, it was much easier for me to pick a
song. I then researched the main techniques and
conventions for my chosen genre and put the ones I felt I
could use into a list. The research allowed me to have a
strong starting point for what I wanted my video to be
like in detail.
PLANNING
My planning helped me produce the video massively as it
allowed me to fully think everything through instead of
just going into it blind. I was able to thoroughly plan out
everything that would happen in the video right down to
each line in the song. It allowed me to create a shot list
which meant I knew exactly what I had to film, it was used
in a checklist type way meaning I wouldn’t miss a single
shot. Planning also allowed me to pick my locations out
carefully and select dates and times for the filming. If I
was to do the planning again I would go into more detail
with my locations. This is because when choosing my
locations I didn’t pick an exact spot for the filming I just
chose a general area. This meant that when it came to
film in that location I had to take time away from filming
to search for the perfect place. If I had done this in
advance to the filming day it would have saved so much
TIME MANAGEMENT
I managed to complete my music video project on time.
Creating a timetable beforehand really helped with
making sure I could achieve this. I gave my self a set
amount of hours for each part of the production and
made sure I stuck to it, this allowed me to finish on time.
If I’d had some additional time I think my video would
have improved a bit more. I would have re-shot a certain
part to get it exactly how I wanted it, this was hard to do
with the time that I had as I needed the perfect night sky
for it. With more time I probably would have gotten
something much closer if not exactly what I was wanting.
I would have also experimented with some more
complexed editing skills instead of the more basic skills
that I used.
TECHNICAL QUALITIES -
CAMERA
Throughout the video majority of the clips were filmed with a medium
shot which works well visually for the viewer. However I did throw in a
low angled shot and a birds eye shot which seem out of place. I think
these should have been filmed with a medium shot so they flow with
the rest. The quality of the footage was mostly clear throughout the
video apart from two sections, birds eye bedroom shot, this was filmed
using my iphones front camera which lowered the quality, outside
filming at night, the weather was foggy which meant the quality was
lower.
TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
With the editing, there are no gaps in between any clips so they
all connect perfectly. The cuts are done to the beat making them
fit with the audio. Each clip was cut so they match perfectly with
each other. All of these factors mean that the sequence flows
really well throughout the course of the whole video. I also
matched up the lip syncing in the video footage with the audio
perfectly making the video much easier to watch and so it looks
finished. The text I included pops up on the screen in time with
when that word is being sung in the audio which also adds to
the video running smoothly. The train clip near the end was cut
to short making it seem out of place and a bit random. I zoomed
in on the penny-boarding clip which resulted in the quality
being lowered. I managed to match up the second clip with the
third clip well making the transition between them really
smooth.
AESTHETIC QUALITIES
They way my music video looks definitely fits with the indie-pop
genre. The added pink colour across the whole music video gives it
that soft look which is what I was aiming for. The blue/lilac sky clip
gives off a calm vibe and also links with the lyrics. The lens flare and
the colours in the clip of the sunrise gives off a sense of warmth and
calmness. The font I used doesn’t compliment the clips. I also think
a pinky colour would have looked better.
AUDIENCE APPEAL
Research shows that the indie-pop genre appeals to both genders
between ages of 16-25. The lyrics usually have a deeper meaning that
only this age group fully understand. The majority of the audience
would more likely be creative artistic type people who dress in comfy
casual clothing.
My video
To appeal to the target audience, I play the main performer myself
because I fall within the same target audience age category. I acted,
edited and filmed the part in a chilled back, fed up kind of way,
hopefully to relate to the lyrics of the song and the frustration felt by
how the older generation view the younger generation. I filmed it in a
simplistic low budget way using simple autumnal backdrops such as
the areas around where I live, empty streets, walk in the park, not to
fancy, very simple, to create a chilled vibe. I wore ripped jeans and
baggy coat , penny board, to relate to the casual look of the indie pop
audience. I kept the filming simple (mainly medium level shot) and
PEER
FEEDBACK
FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product?
The use of different locations makes watching the video
more interesting.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Should have used a different font that is more suitable for
the video and the colouring in some places is too
overpowering so it needs to be lighter/less visible.
FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product?
The sunrise clip and the way the text appears was
effective. The pink colouring fitted well with the videos
style.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
The ending could have been less sharp, extend the last
clip a little further then the song to make it end more
smoothly.
FEEDBACK 3
What did you like about the product?
The visuals linked well with the song and the lip-sync
was done really well. The use of the different angles were
effective.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Could add more transitions throughout the video.
PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree that I should have used a different front, that the visuals worked
well with the song, that the sunrise clip and pink colour layer worked
well, the ending could have been smoother, I could have added more
transitions.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I disagree that the use of different camera angles was effect, I feel that
they don’t really fit with the rest of the video. Also that the pink colour
was in some places overpowering, I think the colour worked really well
and gives a soft look throughout all the video.
What changes would you make based upon this feedback and why?
If I could I would change the way the video ends to get the smooth
ending which would fit the rest of the video. I would also add some
more transitions instead of just the basic cut between clips to make the
video a bit more interesting. I would change the style and colour of the
font to one that goes better with the style and colouring in the rest of
the video.
