SUPERBASS | BILLBOARD
MASTHEAD| LAYOUT
My masthead on the magazine logo represents and conveys
the pop/Hip-Hop genre in a variety of different aspects. I
named it ‘superbass’ as it was one of the artists songs that hit
number one. I put my masthead at the side of the page and
used a basic font that is bold, big so it stands out. Also, much
like Billboard, the masthead is anyways at the side on the page
and its big, bold and basic. I found it a little bit easier by using
information gathered from analysing the above two front
pages, I accurately copied billboard design and built upon the
obvious forms and conventions of magazines focused on Pop/
HipHop. I used a range of elements within mise en scene to try
and grasp my genre. I especially looked at Pop music star Katy
Perry, Lorde as they is a dominant female in the industry, like
the artist I was trying to create for my magazine. I focused on
different covers and photo-shoots of different artist on the front
covers.and tried to bring them to life with my model. Firstly I
attempted to grasp the expression from my research and tried
to create that in my own photo-shoot. From the photo from my
front cover and Lorde on the front cover at the bottom, you can
see a comparison in on what they wearing and they both
looking straight in the the camera. I decided to use high key
lighting, as this gives the images a professional effect, and
whilst editing in Photoshop to make my image more toned, I
also increased the contrast and brightness to give it a distinct
and sharp effect, to make it appear more attractive. On the
layout of the text i was looking at the billboard with Katy Perry
is similer to the my layout its simple but neat.
COSTUME|PROPS
When i started looking for clothes for my
model my main idea was to resemble other
existing female artists and teenage , and take
inspiration of some of their outfits. In the end,
I decided that I wanted my model to wear
bomber jacket that is popular right now, black
top that will blend with light blue jeans. With
pieces of costume, I wanted to resemble
traditional Pop/Hip/hop, with a with a bad girl
twist look, and to do this, I i decided to make
her look directly in the camera and putting the
hood up showing the audience that she could
be a bad girl too. My model makeup wasn't
dramatic it was mostly natural i wanted this to
be like that because i want my magazine to
show young adults that you don't need lots of
makeup to make yourself beautiful
FONT,STYLE|WRITTEN
CONTENT
I have used different varieties of fonts and texts, to
elaborate further in my chosen genre. But to also add
personality to the context and the magazines look,
started my research I went on Dafont.com and scrolled
through different fonts and I tried to choose a bunch that
would fit and complement my genre. All of the fonts
shown are different examples of the fonts I have
included in my magazine. I have tried to represent a
bold look throughout with different fonts, in an effort to
make the magazine look more professional. Other fonts
include colours such as, Nude, Black and White; all
colours that would symbolise the Pop industry. Looking
at my pages, I have made an effort to include language
that would link and belong in Pop music culture. In my
contents page for instance , I have added articles like
charts with hit songs and albums which links to the Pop
music culture By doing things like this, I have made a
link straight away to the culture, and the fans or readers
would recognise this. Along with the use of this
language in my work.
LAYOUT OF FRONT COVER
My magazine followed a lot of conventions from
previous and popular magazines. I took a lot of my
inspiration from already existing Pop magazine:
Billboard. However I used different colours, the colours
are warm. I noticed that a lot of POP covers included a
list of artists at the side of the page with a little bit of
information. I added this convention to my work, to
represent a popular layout, and also to represent other
existing artists to attract customers.
The position of my model is similar to Lorde in the
billboard cover, in the way that he is also dressed in
bomber jacket, but also for the fact that it is a medium
shot. This creates a professional effect, and allows
readers to interpret my magazine with other popular
prints.
LAYOUT OF CONTENT
PAGE
My contents page needed to be bold and to stand out, to allow
the readers to glimpse easily at articles in the magazine. I took
some inspiration from this contents page, in the context of its
layout and structure. The main image shows the singer wearing
black, against a white background. So she stands out and is
noticed. Also Sub-Images used with page numbers next to
them so the reader knows easily where to find each article,
chart shows the no.1 of albums, songs, and the weeks music.
So I used this ideas for my magazine
Also, the colours also contrast to the front page. As I tried to
make it for both gender colour scheme, I have definitely
challenged conventions in this page. However I noticed from
my research that in most Hip-Hop magazine, including billboard
the contents pages.
LAYOUT OF DOUBLE PAGE
SPREAD
❖ Using the information gathered from analysing the
above double-page spread, I thought the Nicki Minaj
double page spread by billboard was great for my
magazines because of the layout the writing is small
and the image of the artists is the centre of the
attention this will built upon the obvious forms and
conventions of magazines focused on pop/ hiphop.
One example of this would be the taking a photo of
my model in a similar pose as Nicki Minaj and make
the model the main attraction, The colours on the
billboard are pink , black and white is the primary
colour scheme here, and suits the genre of
pop/hiphop however the colours will connect more on
the girls because Nicki Minaj is a idol to teenager. So i
have to do is change the colours for them to be
suitable for both genders.
