Magazines have been around since the 17th century, with one of the earliest being a German magazine launched in 1663. The first illustrated magazine was released in 1842 featuring images in The Illustrated London News. As demand grew, production lines were developed to mass produce magazines. Cosmopolitan originally launched as a family magazine in 1886 but became known for its focus on relationships and sex under editor Helen Gurley Brown in the 1960s. The internet has impacted magazines, leading some to develop online presences while some print magazines have seen declining sales as social media allows new ways to engage audiences.
