The Civil War is the central event in America's 
historical consciousness. The Civil War started 
because of uncompromising differences 
between the free and slave states over the 
power of the national government to prohibit 
slavery in the territories that had not yet 
become states. Here we bring 20 amazing facts 
of civil war
 Only Civil War In America’s History 
A Civil War is a war fought between citizens of same 
country. In the United States, the American Civil War is 
known simply as the Civil War. 
 Abraham Lincoln was the President of the 
United States during the Civil War. 
Lincoln declared that he would do everything necessary to 
keep the United States united as one country. He 
refused to recognize the southern states as an 
independent nation and the Civil War erupted in the 
spring of 1861.
 Southern states seceded from the Union 
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the 
United States followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama 
and other states. 
 New Government Was Formed 
Known as the Confederate States of America this 
government was founded on February 4, 1861 by the 
first seven states that seceded from the United States 
 The Civil War began when Southern troops 
bombarded Fort Sumter, South Carolina 
The war started on April 12, 1861 at Fort Sumter. 
South Carolinians launched a bombardment to free the 
forts.
 After the War Started, four More States Joined 
the Confederacy 
After the capturing of Fort Sumter, four more states joined 
the Confederacy. There states were Virginia, Arkansas, 
North Carolina, and Tennessee. 
 Virginia Was Divided Into Two States 
The war led to the creation of the new state of West 
Virginia. Virginia joined the Confederacy, but people 
living in the north-western part of the state agreed with 
the Union. On June 20, 1863 the state of West Virginia 
was born.
 Introduction Of Income Tax During Civil War 
To finance the war against the Confederacy, Revenue Act 
of 1861 introduced income tax in the United States of 
America. 
 It Was Fought On A Large Scale 
Civil war was fought on a large scale and was considered 
to be the first modern or industrial war. Union had 
around 75000 troops while Confederates had authorized 
100,000 troops for their forces. 
 Soldiers Were Drafted by the Confederacy and 
the Union 
In 1862, a draft law was passed that required men aged 
18 to 35 to fight on behalf of the Confederate states.
 Soldiers Could Be Replaced When Substituted 
Replacements were often used when someone was 
drafted in the Union. Just like replacement teachers, 
replacement soldiers were called substitutes. 
 The Military Plan Was Called The Anaconda 
Plan 
Union General-in-Chief Winfield Scott ordered a 
strangling blockade known as the Anaconda Plan to 
block the Confederacy from getting outside resources.
 Both sides took heavy casualties 
Over 20,000 soldiers were killed or wounded in just one 
day. The British considered getting involved in the war, 
but decided not to after this bloody battle took place 
 War Saw An Incredible Amount Of Loss of Life 
Over the course of the war, 237 battles were fought killing 
thousands and thousands of soldiers. 
 Slavery Was Ended Due to Civil War 
One of the outcomes of the Civil War was it brought an 
end to the slavery in United States.
 Naval battles were introduced in Civil Wars 
Use of Naval forces were taken during civil war and most 
of this combat took place during blockades and sieges 
on the Atlantic coast. 
 Soldiers Died in the Prisons 
Initially, soldiers who were captured were exchanged for 
soldiers from opposite side. Later the Confederate 
States refused to exchange Black prisoners. More than 
50,000 people died while in prison during the Civil War.
 The Confederates Could Never Made it Further 
North than Pennsylvania 
Confederate forces travelled north into Pennsylvania. 
However, they were cut off from significant 
reinforcements or supplies loosing the Battle of 
Gettysburg. 
 Use of railroads by the Union was one of the 
keys to their victory. 
Emergence of new technology made the civil war bloody. 
Using railroads, soldiers could be mobilized early and 
easily. 
 Photography Has Kept The Civil War Alive 
Photography was a new art form when the Civil War broke 
out. The cameras were becoming more portable and 
less expensive. Thousands of other Civil War 
photographs can be found online at the Library of 
Congress.
