MAKING PROGRESS FOR THE BOARD DISTRICT 4 SCHOOLS IN THE
FAIRFAX COMMUNITY OF SCHOOLS
As we work to make LA Unified a more transparent, student-centered system that improves academic
outcomes and supports the overall wellbeing of our kids, check out some highlights of the progress we've
made for the school communities in West Hollywood and Fairfax over the past few years.
Served over 140 million free meals and other basic necessities to kids and families in need at our 63 "Grab and Go"
meal centers—including one at Fairfax High—while schools were closed to the COVID-19 pandemic
Began a Youth Advisory Council to hear from
student leaders at all Board District 4 high
schools about their perspective and ideas for
strengthening their educational experience

Supported approval of a new Cinematic Arts
and Creative Technologies Magnet program at
Laurel Span School
Funded new outdoor classrooms and campus
upgrades to support the development of our
youngest learners at Laurel Early Education
Center
Funded the installation of a new wrought iron
fence with pedestrian gates for the Hancock
Park Elementary campus
Collaborated with the City and County to launch the nation's largest
college savings account program, providing a bank account and $50
initial investment for every LAUSD first grader
Funded one of the District's "SEEDS" programs, providing
educational campus gardens, at Hancock Park Elementary (pictured)
Eliminated bureaucratic hurdles to ensure that a parent-led
campus beautification project could be completed without
unnecessary delays at West Hollywood Elementary
Supported LA Works efforts on their annual Martin Luther King, Jr.
Day of Service to bring hundreds of volunteers to paint and beautify
local school campuses, and continue their volunteer efforts virtually
once the pandemic began
Funded walk-in freezers at multiple schools across the District,
including Laurel Span School and West Hollywood Elementary
Helped coordinate and attended a day-long “College Application
Workshop” in partnership with UCLA to prepare and inform high
school students and families
Collaborated with the City of West Hollywood to create school murals, including West Hollywood Elementary (pictured)
Supported the Class of 2020 graduates during the pandemic with gifts, virtual ceremonies and celebrations, and socially
distant or drive-through events at Fairfax High School, West Hollywood Community Day School, CTC West, and Whitman
Continuation High (pictured), and successfuly advocated for safe, in-person graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2021

Successfully advocated for greater flexibility for teacher
assistants to better serve the needs of multiple schools in
the Fairfax community and across the District
Helped ensure that the Melrose Trading Post could safely
reopen and continue to support school programs at
Fairfax High
Ensured that vital after-school programs, including STAR
and the YMCA, could continue to serve our students and
families without disruption
Funded resources for students at Hancock Park
Elementary to participate in local monarch butterfly
conservation efforts
Funded new cameras and equipment to improve security
for Fairfax High campus and surrounding community

After being elected chair of the Committee of the Whole, held one of the first committee meetings at Fairfax High
School in an effort to bring District business into the community and provide greater access and transparency to
parents, community members, and other stakeholders (pictured)
