This document summarizes the Simple Economic Management Approaches of Overlay Traffic in Heterogeneous Internet Topologies project from the European Seventh Framework. The project focused on using economic mechanisms to address the information asymmetry between overlay applications and networks. It employed a SmoothIT Information Service to convey network information between layers to optimize traffic in a way that benefits ISPs, users, and application service providers. Evaluated mechanisms included promoting local peers and inserting resourceful peers to stimulate information sharing while allowing applications freedom of choice. The goal was to manage traffic to benefit all stakeholders through cooperation rather than traditional single-metric optimization.
