Leonardo Fibonacci was born in 1170 in Italy and travelled extensively around the Mediterranean region where he learned about the Hindu-Arabic numeral system from merchants. He realized the advantages of this system over traditional Roman numerals and helped introduce the decimal system to Europe. He is considered one of the greatest European mathematicians of the Middle Ages and is famous for introducing decimal numerals and the Fibonacci sequence to Western Europe.
