Crime magazine
Information on two types of
crimes:
- A religious cult preparing for
the apocalypse
- A gruesome murder in which
the films Psycho, and The
Texas Chainsaw Massacre was
based off, as well as more.
Target Audience
Demographic:
-16+
-Middle-class
-No race or gender bias
Psychographic:
-Interested in crime and murder
- Watches documentaries
Contextual References
• There were two references
that inspired me the most:
-True Crimes book
by Robert Jackson
- Real Crime magazines
True Crimes Book
-A variety of crimes
-Full of valid information on
each of the crimes
-Displays images related to each
of the crimes
Real Crime magazines
-The layout of the images
and text
-Colour palette used
-The spacing between text
and images
-The fonts used
Influences on my work
• One of the major similarities
of both the covers is the
layout of the cover: the text,
title, images, etc. This is
what I adopted to my work
to try to make it look as
professional looking as
possible in terms of a
magazine.
• Another aspect that I
adopted is the main topic of
this issue being the centre
piece, in my magazine’s case
having David Koresh instead
of Ian Brady.
Real Crime Magazine
My Magazine cover Chosen Real Crime Magazine cover
Post-Production process
• Gathering images that I want or may want to use in my magazine, and
saving them into a folder.
• Gathering website links to valid sources of information on the two
crimes that I have chosen for my magazine to be about, and putting
the links into a bibliography.
• Writing up articles before production so that I don’t have to worry
about them in the production stage, and saving them to a word
document.
• Finding and setting up two types of page designs, double-page
spread, and single-page spread, in Adobe Photoshop.
Production Process
• First week focused on my cover and contents page.
• Then for the next four weeks I focused on the David Koresh pages.
• Then for the remaining two weeks I focused on the Ed Gein pages and
the back-cover.
• All production work completed using Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe
InDesign after completion for the layout of the magazine.
Final Outcome
Successes:
• The layout of the cover and
magazine in general
• The difference in each of
the pages
• The overall professional
magazine feel to it,
especially in the cover and
double-page spreads.
• The contents page matching
the over all style to the
magazine and colour
scheme throughout.
Failures:
• On one of the pages the
text is very squished and
is hard to read (shown to
the right).
• Some of the images used
throughout look slightly
distorted and stretched.
• No primary images
gathered.
Overall Reflection
• I think that I have kept to my theme throughout, displaying knowledge for this
particular topic chosen.
• I kept the magazine simple and easy to read in most parts excluding that one
page.
• I stuck to the schedule, however later was ahead of my planning therefore
didn’t need it no more.
• I would have liked to add more pages if I had the time, potentially exploring
another crime such as ‘The Moors Murders’.
• I stuck to the theme of having the cover be like an actual magazine rather
than a book cover which was initially discussed before starting production.
• Looking back I wish I had tried to take more of my own images, so that I had
more primary research.
Peer Feedback
Positive Feedback:
• The cover looks very
professional.
• Not overly detailed
neither to little
detailed.
• The design of the
cover looks like an
actual magazine
cover.
Negative Feedback:
• Accompany more text
alongside the images.
• Make the text more
readable
• Make the images look
smoother and the
colours
• Too much going on
• Take more of your own
pictures
My Response to the
feedback:
• One person didn’t really
understand the concept of
my chosen topic.
• I disagree with ‘too much
going on’ as I don’t want
the pages to be plain and
boring, as no one would
want to read them.
• I do agree with the last
negative feedback in that I
need more of my own
images, I think that is the
main aspect I would change
if I had the time.
I decided to make a new Instagram account, that showcases my work like an
online portfolio. The reason I chose Instagram was because I find it to be a very
easy way of sharing your work with others, as people can follow you, and you
can follow other creators. I think that this alongside Issuu would be a great way
of sharing my work and putting it out there for others to discover. I have
decided that I am not going to University anymore, however I still want to get
my work out there so that if in the future I do decide to go to University, I will
have this work to showcase. I think one big strength of mine is creating covers
for things like magazines, and albums. I also think that another strength of
mine is image manipulation. These are things that I would have developed if I
decided that I was going to University. One weakness that I had was adding the
text into the pages as well as finding my own primary images, gathering images
myself. This would be something that I would improve at University.
I uploaded my work to Issuu. So that my magazine is out there and can be discovered. I
also looked at forums and websites that had relevance to my magazine such as the Zodiac
Killer forum website where I thought about making my own forum similar to that but on
Reddit. Where people could clip through my magazine. I decided to make an Instagram
page and a forum on Reddit about my magazine. This was to help my magazine become
discoverable.
Homepage
The first place where I uploaded my work was on Wix. I uploaded it to my website under the ‘FMP’ section standing for
final major project. I think that Wix website creator is a great way to showcase your work just like Instagram, and Issuu.
Also I can add my website link to my Instagram page, which would mean my followers could visit my website and look at
the other pieces that I have done throughout the project.
Peer Feedback
This is the cover that I made to resemble a crime magazine cover
like Real Crime magazine. The title was
The contents page is based off the contents page
of the True Crimes book that I looked at as my
main primary research. However I adapted it to fit
my magazine style that I was going for.
This page was designed so that the reader knows that
this part of the magazine will be about David Koresh
and The Branch Davidians. Sort of like a chapter page
in a book, tells you that it’s the next chapter and what
the chapters called.
