Podcast 12: What is an adverb?
What is an adverb?
Adverbs are words that provide additional information about verbs, adjectives,
and other adverbs.

i. He spoke slowly (verb + adverb)
ii. She’s blissfully happy (adverb + adjective)
iii. They read incredibly quickly (adverb + adverb)

In English, adverbs are most commonly – though not always – formed by adding
-ly to an adjective (loudly, softly, forcefully, weakly).

Adverbs are normally used to indicate manner, degree, frequency, place and time.

                                                                         Page 2
What is an adverb?
Types of adverbs:
Adverbs of manner: Answer the question “how?” about the verb, adjective or adverb
i. He spoke eloquently ii. Alexandra cooks well

Adverbs of degree: Answer the question “how much?” about the verb, adjective or adverb
i. Linda was really happy with her mark ii. I’ve almost finished my homework

Adverbs of time: Answer the question “when?” about the verb, adjective or adverb
i. We’ll be leaving soon ii. He’ll meet us later

                                                                                   Page 3
What is an adverb?
Types of adverbs:
Adverbs of place: Answer the question “where?” about the verb, adjective or adverb
i. I left my car there ii. She walked behind him

Adverbs of frequency: Answer the question “how often?” about the verb, adjective or adverb
i. I go to the library frequently ii. I usually work from home

                                                                                Page 4
What is an adverb?
Some adverbs provide additional information about an entire proposition:
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend the meeting

Sometimes, words that normally have a different function in a sentence – for
example certain adjectives – can also be used as adverbs:
i. I can’t shoot straight ii. Think hard about your decision

The position of adverbs in a sentence is important. This varies from language to
language and is determined by various factors, including the type of adverb being
used and the overall rhythm of the sentence.
i. I know her barely  ii. I barely know her 
ii. He spoke harshly to me  ii. He spoke to me harshly 

                                                                                   Page 5
