This document discusses the rise of freestanding emergency medical facilities (FSEDs) in the United States. Unlike urgent care clinics, FSEDs are designed to replicate full emergency department services but cannot admit patients. The growth of FSEDs is driven by population growth, demand for more convenient emergency care, and a decline in hospital emergency departments. Texas will begin licensing and regulating FSEDs as of September 2010. FSEDs aim to offer shorter wait times and a more pleasant environment than hospital emergency rooms by catering to insured patients in suburban areas. They must be equipped and staffed to provide emergency diagnostic and clinical care 24/7.
