This document summarizes the history of land distribution and ownership of the Mora Land Grant in northern New Mexico between 1835-1916. In 1835, an alcalde distributed agricultural lands along the Mora River to 76 settlers, establishing the twin plazas of Santa Gertrudis and San Antonio. He also designated common lands for grazing. After the U.S. took control of New Mexico in 1846, Anglo settlers and speculators increasingly pressured for ownership of the common lands. In 1916, a court finally partitioned the common lands, though scholars argue local residents acquired more lands than traditionally thought, challenging the narrative of widespread outsider control.
