Fundraising Solicitation Decision Model
A worked example for Deede
Original version 02/10/2012
Updated 10/05/2013
There are three giving clubs, membership for which is defined by a range of
contribution values. Therefore, a graduate could be a member of different clubs
at a different point in time. An association class has been added to record the
membership details of a graduate to a given club.

Decision Rule Family View
‘Graduate Giving Club Status’ is defined in a supporting rule family view. This version of
the rules has added a new status of ‘Former Member’ to distinguish it from those that
have never been the member of a Giving Club.
The two dates evaluated in ‘Donation History Last Gift Date’ are also defined in two
supporting rule family views

Supporting Rule Family View – Test of Populated Characteristic
This rule family view tests the populated characteristic of a fact type, that is, whether there’s any value
in there at all, irrespective of what it is
This type of rule family has been used to accommodate the importance to the analyst in demonstrating
how club status is defined in a COTS package.
This has been taken from the following logic:
A Current Giving Club 1 member is defined in the database by the existence of a GC1 record and the non-
existence of a GC1Former record. A Former Giving Club 1 member can be identified 3 ways: No GC1 record, No
GC1 record and a GC1Former record, a GC1 record and a GC1Former record
The first and second rules have been combined; effectively, if a GC1 exists, it’s irrelevant whether a
former record exists in determining that the graduate is a current member.

Supporting Rule Family View – use of formulae in an operand to produce
a fact type value
These rule family views are examples of unconditional computations; that is, there are no
conditions, because the conclusion is always the same. The formula is expressed in Microsoft Excel
terminology; and is a very precise way of specifying the requirements for the dates needed for use in
the dependent rule family view. It means that the decision model itself could be automated directly.
