  The Action Planfor Geography The over-arching goal of the Action Plan for Geography (APG) is: ‘To provide everyone – opinion formers, policy makers, schools, parents and pupils – with a clear vision of geography as a relevant, powerful 21st century subject; and to equip teachers with the professional skills and support they need so that pupils enjoy and succeed in geography.’ One key aspect of the APG is curriculum making; the creative process by which classroom teachers use the subject to excite, stimulate and lead the learning. The courses and events outlined in this booklet are geared to supporting fresh and effective curriculum making appropriate to your school or setting. The 2006-08 programme, funded by the APG, includes free of charge courses and events at over 10 locations throughout the country. These include: I Curriculum-making courses (for both primary and KS3 levels) I ‘Quality Geography for All’ regional conferences I Geography 21 annual conference There is a booking form for all events at the back of this booklet.   Curriculum-making courses Primary geographyand ICT Primary geography and citizenship Primary geography and ESD KS3 geography and ICT KS3 geography and citizenship KS3 geography and ESD These courses aim to: I support teachers in developing informed, relevant and enjoyable learning activities that help learners to succeed in geography I provide practical guidance on current developments in geography education I explore different resources and strategies appropriate to each cross- cutting theme I help teachers become more confident about the significance of geography education to the wider education of young people I exchange views and experiences with others. The courses are made up of three interconnecting experiences: a face-to- face conference, online and telephone support and an evaluation meeting. The use of cross-cutting themes (ICT, citizenship and education for sustainable development) will enable us to show how geography contributes to the wider education of all young people. We will emphasise geography’s potential to: I link learning in classrooms with young people’s real experiences of their place I extend their geographical understanding by making transparent links and interconnections between their locality and other places at a variety of scales I develop an understanding of the causes of change in our world In year 1, the citizenship course will also explore key stage 2-3 transition issues. In year 2, transition will be explored through the sustainable development theme. These courses will be co-ordinated and led by the GA’s Action Plan for Geography team.   Curriculum-making courses Part 1:Conference At this initial conference, you will receive inputs, curriculum materials and support. You will be asked to think about how you can develop the potential of geography in your school. Ours is a subject that can inspire young people to understand their own lives in a global context.   Quality Geography forAll regional conferences These free, half-day regional conferences provide a great opportunity to discuss and develop what we mean by ‘quality geography’ in both the primary and secondary phases.   Geography 21 annual conferences: DevelopingGCSE geography The pilot geography GSCE has had a successful start, with over 70 schools already involved and many others wishing to join. This conference aims to: I share the goals of the pilot GCSE and its vision for 14-16 geography I highlight innovative approaches to GCSE geography teaching and learning I provide support for developing GCSE geography in your own school. Classroom practitioners who have been involved in the development of the pilot GCSE will lead a variety of workshop sessions that will share innovative GCSE practice.
