Gandhinagar has established itself as an important industrial and economic center in Gujarat. It has 7 special economic zones and 10 industrial estates that are home to major industries like textiles, food processing, electronics. The district also has over 8,000 small-scale industries providing employment. Gandhinagar is well-connected through infrastructure projects like the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor that passes through the state. The government is promoting investment through initiatives like the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors' Summit.

Economy and Industry Profile § Services in the public sector, Electrical & Electronics, Textiles, Food Processing, IT/ITeS, Ceramics and Office Stationery are some of the major vocational and industrial activities in Gandhinagar § Electronics and Textiles have been the main sectors of investment and employment in Gandhinagar district since the late 1980s § The Food Processing industry of the district is well developed because of the proximity to agricultural districts such as Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Ahmedabad, Kheda, Anand, etc § Infrastructure development is another sector that has opened up new opportunities for investment and employment § With the recent surge in investments in the IT/ ITeS sector, Gandhinagar is progressively shaping into an attractive destination for IT/ ITeS companies 7

Economy Drivers § Being the State Capital, most of the State Government offices are located in Gandhinagar; hence a major section of the working population of Gandhinagar is employed in public sector services § Recent surge in the growth of infrastructure projects in the district has increased the employment opportunities for the masses § Close proximity to the agro-food and biotech clusters of Ahmedabad has opened up new avenues for the food processing industry, research centres, and educational institutes § Small scale industry sectors such as textiles, electronics, mineral- based, wood products and engineering are the supporting pillars of the economy. They provide direct & indirect employment to over 40,000 people in the district 15

Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) Map 6: Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor § The Government of India plans to develop a Dedicated Freight 150 Km Corridor (DFC) linking Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai § The proposed DFC passes through six states in India, of which, Gujarat accounts for 38% (564 Km) of total DFC length (1483 Km) § The influenced area of 150 Km on either sides of DFC is being developed as “Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor” (DMIC) § Almost 62% of total area of Gujarat (18 out of 26 districts) would be benefited by DMIC development Mumbai- Delhi High Axel Load Freight Corridor (DFC) § The State Government has identified 82 links in the DMIC Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Knowledge Corridor Investment Region (200 sq. Km) influenced area to upgrade them into two/four lane Industrial Area (100 sq. Gujarat International Finance Tec-City Map 7: § Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT), a one stop Gujarat International Finance Tec-City destination for global financial service industry is being developed at Shahpur village on the banks of the Sabarmati Gandhi Nagar river § GIFT is being developed by Gujarat Finance City Ahmedabad Development Company Ltd., a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of Gujarat and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services § The project is slated to commence construction by March 2008 § The 500 acre mega project being developed at a cost of INR 150 billion is expected to be completed by 2010 GIFT Ahmedabad § The project will also house a 250 acre SEZ and is targeted to generate nearly 1 million new jobs Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) Source: Gujarat: Beyond the Obvious, 2007 21

Road, Rail & Air Connectivity Map 8: Gandhinagar Road & Rail Network Road § National Highway (NH) 8 and 8C runs through the district connecting it with major cities of the State as also with the rest of India. § It is connected with Ahmedabad by the Sarkhej- Gandhinagar highway (28 km) and with Vadodara by the Ahmedabad-Vadodara expressway (139 km) § Distance from major industrial centres in the State: Rajkot (249 km), Jamnagar (337 km), Valsad (373 km), Ankleshwar (223 km), Bhavnagar (228 km), Mehsana (68 km) and Surat (306 km) § Distance from major cities in India: Mumbai (573 km), Delhi (943 km), Kolkata (1952 km) and Chennai (1854 km) Rail § Western railways connect Gandhinagar with major cities in India such as Delhi and Mumbai via Ahmedabad Air § Nearest airport (Ahmedabad) is 22 km away Source: Gandhinagar District Profile booklet, 2007 23
Power Supply Network Power § Gandhinagar district enjoys uninterrupted 24 hour power supply § The main power station is located in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat. § One 400 KV service station, two 220 KV service stations and one 132 KV service station supply power throughout the district. Water Supply Water Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can be obtained from three main sources, viz Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB), Irrigation Canal and Sardar Sarovar Project. Health § Gandhinagar hosts some of the best hospitals in the State such as Apollo Hospital , Kanoria Hospital and the Civil Hospital which have the facilities and the expertise to provide excellent health services § The 400-bed Apollo Hospital in Gandhinagar treats an average of 10,000 patients every year and is the only hospital in Gujarat with a 1.5 Tesla MRI scan . Tourism § Akshardham Swaminarayan Temple built in pink stone and white marble, spread over 9 hectares is one of the city’s main tourist attractions. The Narayan Sarovar, which surrounds the 3.3 meter idol of Swaminarayan contains water from 151 rivers and lakes Akshardam Swaminarayan Temple § Adalaj Step Wells were built in 1499 by Queen Ruda, the wife of Vaghela Chief Vikramsinh, as a resting place for travellers. The steps descend 5 stories in elaborately carved geometric, floral and animal designs § The city also has the Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil Park, which exhibits dinosaur eggs and is said to be the second largest dinosaur Adalaj (Step well) park in the world.     Introduction: Gandhinagar § Gandhinagar, the administrative capital of Gujarat was Map 1: District Map of Gandhinagar with Talukas carved out of Ahmedabad district in late 1960s § The district has four talukas, viz.     Economy and IndustryProfile § Services in the public sector, Electrical & Electronics, Textiles, Food Processing, IT/ITeS, Ceramics and Office Stationery are some of the major vocational and industrial activities in Gandhinagar § Electronics and Textiles have been the main sectors of investment and employment in Gandhinagar district since the late 1980s § The Food Processing industry of the district is well developed because of the proximity to agricultural districts such as Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Ahmedabad, Kheda, Anand, etc § Infrastructure development is another sector that has opened up new opportunities for investment and employment § With the recent surge in investments in the IT/ ITeS sector, Gandhinagar is progressively shaping into an attractive destination for IT/ ITeS companies 7

    Economy Drivers § Beingthe State Capital, most of the State Government offices are located in Gandhinagar; hence a major section of the working population of Gandhinagar is employed in public sector services § Recent surge in the growth of infrastructure projects in the district has increased the employment opportunities for the masses § Close proximity to the agro-food and biotech clusters of Ahmedabad has opened up new avenues for the food processing industry, research centres, and educational institutes § Small scale industry sectors such as textiles, electronics, mineral- based, wood products and engineering are the supporting pillars of the economy. They provide direct & indirect employment to over 40,000 people in the district 15

    Delhi Mumbai IndustrialCorridor (DMIC) Map 6: Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor § The Government of India plans to develop a Dedicated Freight 150 Km Corridor (DFC) linking Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai § The proposed DFC passes through six states in India, of which, Gujarat accounts for 38% (564 Km) of total DFC length (1483 Km) § The influenced area of 150 Km on either sides of DFC is being developed as “Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor” (DMIC) § Almost 62% of total area of Gujarat (18 out of 26 districts) would be benefited by DMIC development Mumbai- Delhi High Axel Load Freight Corridor (DFC) § The State Government has identified 82 links in the DMIC Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Knowledge Corridor Investment Region (200 sq.     Power Supply Network Power § Gandhinagar district enjoys uninterrupted 24 hour power supply § The main power station is located in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat. § One 400 KV service station, two 220 KV service stations and one 132 KV service station supply power throughout the district.     Water Supply Water Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can be obtained from three main sources, viz Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB), Irrigation Canal and Sardar Sarovar Project.     Tourism § Akshardham Swaminarayan Temple built in pink stone and white marble, spread over 9 hectares is one of the city’s main tourist attractions. The Narayan Sarovar, which surrounds the 3.3 meter idol of Swaminarayan contains water from 151 rivers and lakes Akshardam Swaminarayan Temple § Adalaj Step Wells were built in 1499 by Queen Ruda, the wife of Vaghela Chief Vikramsinh, as a resting place for travellers. The steps descend 5 stories in elaborately carved geometric, floral and animal designs § The city also has the Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil Park, which exhibits dinosaur eggs and is said to be the second largest dinosaur Adalaj (Step well) park in the world.
