It is commonly accepted in contemporary society that family structures are defined
as being either a nuclear family, or one that strays away from that. According to
Dalton Conley in the fourth edition of You May Ask Yourself, the nuclear family is
defined as a familial form consisting of a father, a mother, and their children (453).
By definition and contemporary societal norms, my familywould be categorized as
abnormal or different. Having been raised in an apartment in the Bronx, New York
with only my mother, I have a different idea of what normal familial structures tend
to be. Despite being brought up in a home with a single mother, I have a vivid
recollection of those in my hometown being raised in very similar circumstances.
Similarly, it seems everyone around me had the same sort of familial story : raised
by one parent, occasionally spoke to your parents siblings and hung out with your
first cousins, have a crazy uncle. To people of different demographics than myself
and my family, these characteristics may appear to be unfamiliar and atypical,
however, to me they are what amalgamate to create the urban version of the nuclear
family. The traditional stereotype is that mother s hold families together. According

World War II in that the mother became more active in the workforce and contributed

School Night
Laying down in your bed, you hear this consistent knocking. You try to sleep
through it but it seems as if it will never quit. Curious, you roll out of bed away
from the comfort of your wife s warm body but cautiously move closer, step by step
downstairs into the direction of the sound. Each step you take wondering whether
or not your house is being robbed. You finally ease your way downstairs and
quickly flip the light switch only to find your home empty and totally void of any
damage or evidence of a theft of any kind; however, you still hear the sound. You
notice it s coming from your front door, but its 3 A.M. on a school night. The hairs
on the back of your neck begin to rise and your heart beats faster, wondering who is
violently knocking on your front door. You remember the incident at your store
where a brick was thrown through the window and how you angered the community
by canceling a game and blemishing a season with such a historical start. You pull
the shade back on the front door, revealing not an angered parent, but Timo Cruz,
once a player on your basketballteam that you haven t seen for weeks, covered in

The beginning of Human Knowledge is through the senses, and the fiction writer
begins where human perception begins. He appeals through the senses, and you
cannot appeal to the senses with abstractions. Flannery O Connor. Hector Tobar
develops the genre of suburban dystopia in his novel The Barbarian Nurseries
through the use of imagery to appeal to the reader s senses and provide him or her
with the knowledge to to begin developing the idea of what the book s genre might be.
Hector Tobar immediately employs imagery so you can begin identifying the
setting to the genre it could be a part of. There s the image of a sunny day, cut grass,
a well decorated garden, identical houses all over the neighborhood, and an empty cul
de sac. These are all staples to the American suburban fiction where many of the
people from the middle class choose to live there to get away from the fast paced
and crowded lifestyles of the cities like Los Angeles and New York. Just right after
this setting settled into our minds, Tobar provides a hint for this setting to be
considered dystopian by putting one of the main characters, Scott in a relatively
difficult situation for him. That situation being lawn mowing, a mundane act for
most people to relate to making it also fit into the genre of realistic fiction. I say that
he s providing a hint of a suburban dystopia because Scott is unhappy with his
situation, and by definition, a dystopia is a city where the public is generally unhappy.

Business Acumen
My current manager has got to be the most applicable reference to business acumen
that I can think of. I have worked for the Federal Government for 4 years now, and
have worked for my current boss for 2 of those years. Her name is Cindy and she is
without a doubt the best boss I have ever had. Throughout my time here, Cindy has
taught me the ins and outs of supply chain, product management, and so much more.
Although she is incredibly efficient at her job and the tasking it entails, I have
found that it is not her true passion. Cindy loves to help people. She has made it her
mission in life to make sure nobody on our team ever feels lost of like they don t
have anyone fighting for them, and she has shown many times how much she truly...
As stated by Drucker in this week s reading ...you couldn t predict the environment of
the future. However, what you could do is create the future (Cohen, 2008).
Throughout my years here, I have seen the forward thinking mentality of Cindy.
She is truly a woman beyond her years. She has spent the last 20 years creating a
name for herself in this organization and it has certainly not gone unnoticed. I have
witnessed the creation of new programs used to support the fleet, and even Cindy s
hands on approach to problem solving at the root of the issue, as opposed to waiting
until the issue hit her desk. This is another aspect of business acumen that I believe
Cindy truly possessed; the ability to handle decisions so that the future brings
good outcomes. I could never ask for a better working environment or a better,
more knowledgeable boss. I have observed these skills and will apply them to my
career one day. I hope to be a manager that people enjoy working for, but also trust
to make the right decisions for all parties involved. I believe I have learned those
traits from Cindy in my very short, but very informative time here.

In terms of the American political system, the most significant of the theories of the
origin of the state is that of the Social Contract . Philosophers such as Thomas
Hobbes, James Harrington, and John Locke in england and Jean Jacques Rousseau in
France developed this theory in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Hobbes
wrote that in earliest history humans lived in unbridled freedom, in a state of nature,
in which no government existed and no person was subject to any superior power
