Global Warming and Climate Change - by Andrada Clipici

-

The most pressing problems humankind
faces today include :
global warming,
climate change,
energy conservation,
pollution,
deforestation
and, certainly not the last, freshwater
resources.
Global warming was
very likely caused by
increasing
concentrations
of greenhouse effect
resulting from human
activity. With global
warming on the
increase chances for
ecosystems to adapt
naturally are
diminishing. Pollution
can cause instability or
discomfort to the
ecosystem.
The planet is warming, from North Pole
to South Pole, and everywhere in
between. Globally, the mercury is
already up more than 0.8 degrees
Celsius, and even more in sensitive polar
regions.

Some impacts from increasing
temperatures are already happening.

Ice is melting worldwide, especially at
the Earth’s poles. This includes mountain
glaciers, ice sheets covering West
Antarctica and Greenland, and Arctic
sea ice.



Air pollution is due to human influences that
contaminate the air with chemicals. The two
types of air pollution: smog and soot pose health
risks and environmental dangers. Of the two
forms of air pollution, particle pollution is more
dangerous.

The removal of trees from the ecosystem
without sufficient reforestation has resulted in
damage to habitat and biodiversity.
The highest percentage of electricity consumed
by mankind is produced by burning fossil fuels.
This results in the emission of CO2 that is
released to the atmosphere. It also contributes to
enhancing the greenhouse effect and global
warming. However, power plants are emitting
sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon.
The consequences of the greenhouse effect and global
warming are:
- increasing water levels and ocean temperatures
- higher frequency of hurricanes, tornadoes and storms
- and the most important: the animals who are in danger
because their territories are being destroyed by people.


Rising sea levels will result in migration of
millions of people and inundating productive
farmland. Melting glaciers will reduce water flow
to some of the most densely populated regions of
the world, affecting agricultural production and
national income. No doubt, global warming
affects the environment, as well as humans and
other creatures.
In conclusion, some of the major effects
of global warming are:
1. Acid rain
Gases mix with moisture in the air and
precipitation are acidic, making them similar
to lemonade. Acid rain destroys plants and
animals.
2. Ecosystems will change.
Some species will move further north or
become more successful; others won’t be
able to move and could become extinct.
3. Forest fires
Global warming is not only able to melt
the glaciers, but can cause devastating
fires.
4. Gene changes
The spring which comes early creates a
huge problem for animals.
