What is Project Loon
Project Loon is a research and development project bring
developed by Google
Project loon Is a network of balloon Travelling on edge of space,
Designed to connect with the people In Rural and Remote areas.
Designed by- Mohit Malviya 4
History
• In 2001, Space Data Inc. , suggested an idea to widen the cellular
coverage for the rural areas in the united states. The idea was to
have wireless transceivers carried a lot on weather balloons,
launched by National Weather Service (NSW).
• For the past 60 years, the NSW is launching 70 balloons twice a
day across the country to collect the weather information. The
weather balloons are in fact floating above specific areas for
about 24 hours at about 30 km.
• “The balloon can be a mini and cheaper cell tower in the sky”.
Designed by- Mohit Malviya 5
• One balloon with a weight of 1.5 kg, a size of 7.6 m (25ft) when
fully inflated, can cover a 670 km diameter coverage circle below.
• It currently covers only Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana.
• In 2008, Google contracted with space Data Corporation.
• In 2011, Google began unofficially developing the project under
Google X labs
• In 2013, Google announced the project officially and later they
launched the first 30 ballons in New Zealand.
• In 2015, Google signed agreements with Sri Lanka becomes the
second covered with LTE internet Vatican City.

How Loon Moves
• Project Loon balloons travels around 20km above the earth’s
surface in the stratosphere.
• Winds in the stratosphere are generally steady and slow-moving
at between 5 and 20 mph, and each layer of wind varies in
direction and magnitude.
• The set-up uses software algorithms to determine where its
balloons need to go, then moves each one into a layer of wind
blowing in the right direction.

ENVELOPE
ENVELOPE Designed by- Mohit Malviya 10
Envelope
• Project Loon’s balloon envelopes are made from sheets of
polyethylene plastic Diameter: 49 ft, height: 39 ft and stand
fifteen meters wide by twelve meters tall when fully inflated.
• Resistant to UV rays and stable in temperature like – 58F
• Maximum lifetime of 100 days
• Can be recycled and re-launched easily
Designed by- Mohit Malviya 11
Solar Panels Designed by- Mohit Malviya 12
Solar Panels
• In sunlight these panels can produce 100w of power
• Used to run the whole ballon system in the sky in day and night
• Rechargeable batteries are used, which are charged with the help
of solar panels
Designed by- Mohit Malviya 13
PAYLOAD Designed by- Mohit Malviya 14
Payload
• The payload is a small box that holds electronic devices, such as
circuit boards, radio antennas, batteries, GPS, flight sensors, and
devices to monitor weather conditions.
• The circuit board: control the overall balloon system.
• Radio antennas: communicate with other balloons and with
internet antennas on ground.
• Batteries: store solar power so the balloon can operate in night.
Designed by- Mohit Malviya 15
User Connectivity
Designed by- Mohit Malviya 16
User Connectivity
• USERS OF THE SERVICE TO THE BALLOON NETWORK USING A
SPECIAL Internet antenna attached to their building.
• The signal travels through the balloon network from ballon to
ballon, then to a ground-based station connected to an internet
service provider (ISP)
• The system aims to improve communication during natural
disaster to affected regions.

Designed by- Mohit Malviya 18
Advantages
• Lower Cost
• Availability of Information
• Education
• Health and Medicine
• Use of Renewable Energy
• Weather Surveillance
• collaboration
Designed by- Mohit Malviya 19
Disadvantages
• Hardware Failure
• Internet privacy
• Not a replacement of satellite communication.
• International politics
Designed by- Mohit Malviya 20
Designed by- Mohit Malviya 21
Conclusion
• Internet connectivity and communication become one of the
basic needs in modern human daily life .
• An innovative and scalable idea like the Google project Loon
would aid and benefit remote areas of the world as well as
population to reap the benefits of modern communication
• It would also provide backbone communications during and after
natural disaster when ground infrastructure is scarce or
destroyed.
