It is a sequence display that uses
space to show ordering of events,
patterns, stages, numbers or phrases.
Graphic organizers are effective tools
that can be used to visualize and
organize information for all students.
It is highly useful in any class setting
and easily integrated for low tech
inclusion.

Always
Wondered, What
is a Graphic
Organizer?
What makes Graphic Organizers effective?
Graphic organizers help to create more meaningful learning, strengthen student comprehension
and retention of new information, by making concepts more concrete and connecting new
information with background knowledge.
An analysis published in an issue of the journal Thalamus looked at why and how graphic organizers
work effectively for students with learning disabilities. The research found that, “students with low verbal
ability gain more from graphic organizers than students with high verbal ability; that students with little or
no prior knowledge in a subject gain more from graphic organizers than students with an abundance of
prior knowledge in a subject; that graphic organizers are especially helpful in assisting students with far-
transfer tasks, such as applying knowledge to new or unusual situations, in addition to near transfer
tasks and factual recall; and that graphic organizers are effective because of their computational
efficiency, minimizing stress on the working memory” (LaJeunesse, 2011). In an issue of the journal
Learning Disability Quarterly, studies showed positive effects of graphic organizers on posttest
performance of students with learning disabilities, suggesting that the use of graphic organizers can help
students retain their learned information for an extended period of time.
So what are some common types of graphic
organizers you can use?
Take a look at these cool packets!
Story Map
What is it?
A story map is a classroom approach to
reading that uses a graphic organizer to
help students learn the elements of
literature as well as other subject matter.
A story map can help us to 'see' the
separate parts of a story.
What does it look like?
Sequencing
What is it?
Your student can use this type of
organizer to identify the sequence
of events in a story or a sequential
task.
What does it look like?
Concept Map
What is it?
Otherwise known as “Semantic
Maps,” these are webs of words or
phrases. The purpose is to visually
connect the meaning of a word or
phrase, with a set of related words
or concepts.
What does it look like?
Graphs
What is it?
This is a diagram used to show a
system of connections or interrelations
among two or more things. This can be
represented by a number of dots, lines,
bars, or pictures.
This example shows the same info
graphed in different ways - table chart,
pie chart or pictogram.
What does it look like?
Hierarchies/Tree Diagrams
What is it?
Is a graphic tool which
systematically breaks down, and
then maps out in increasing detail,
all pieces of a process or situation,
at different levels or stages.
What does it look like?
Compare and Contrast: Venn Diagram
What is it?
Is made up of two or three overlapping circles.
Venn diagrams are used to visually show the
relationship between two or three sets. Venn
diagrams can easily be used to compare and
contrast the characteristics of items, like
groups of people, books, characters,
characteristics, animals, etc.
What does it look like?
Compare and Contrast:
Matrix, Chart, Slant Chart, or Table
What is it?
This strategy helps students pull
details from the text and organize
them into a logical chart to use
when they are studying or writing.
What does it look like?
Pictorial Visual Display
What is it?
Ex: a Heart
Static Pictorials are a still picture of the heart.
Dynamic Pictorials would show the same picture,
but include blood flow.
These two show “this is what it is” and “this is
how it works”. These 2 methods of pictorial
displays affect cognitive processing by focusing or
directing attention to a desired message. The
contents of the pictures are processed into
memory by excluding other elements.
What does it look like?
Color Coded
What is it?
Uses symbolism to help students
remember the role of each
paragraph and to organize their
thoughts.

How are Graphic
Organizers used in
school?
Instructional Strategies:
● Cause and effect
● Note taking
● Comparing and contrasting concepts
● Organizing problems and solutions
● Relating information to main themes
and ideas
● Organizational skills

Overview of Effectiveness of Practice in
Literacy Instruction
Complex Communication Disorder
For these students, Graphic Organizers are extremely beneficial; both academically and
functionally. GO’s can be used to organize abstract concepts visually, but can also be used in a far
more utilitarian way. For students with a complex communication disorder, a graphic organizer
can be used to track a daily schedules and can be partnered to meet communication needs. Many
of these students have difficulty processing extended verbal communication, and a graphic
organizer gives them a concrete symbol to use as a cue.
Overview of Effectiveness of Practice in
Literacy Instruction
Dyslexia
Many of our students with Dyslexia are visual learners, meaning that they learn
information by seeing it. Graphic organizers will help the learner to visualize the
information being taught and then visually organize the thoughts in their head. If
given a writing task, a graphic organizer will help the student organize their thoughts
and sequence them into logical events or ideas prior to writing.
Overview of Effectiveness of Practice in
Literacy Instruction
English Language Learners
Visual illustrations allow students who are English Language Learners to
better understand the material while learning important vocabulary.
Graphic organizers provide a visual summary as they describe
information – introducing ELLs to new vocabulary pictorially while
simultaneously reinforcing decoding skills.
Now that we know all about Graphic
Organizers, let’s practice!
Discussion
1. You have a student who is an English Language Learner with Dyslexia. When
giving a literacy lesson, what graphic organizer would you use and why?
2. How can a graphic organizer help students with reading comprehension?
Before - During - After?
