Hadrian´s wall was a defensive fortification in  northern   England.  The emperor Hadrian  built   the wall in 122 AD, when the Romans  took over   Britain and the country  became   rich, with farms and  trade . The  wealth  attracted  northern tribes (the Picts), who lived in Scotland (North of Britain).   They  stole  and burnt the farms. The  Roman Emperor   Hadrian  visited  Britain in AD 122.  According to  the stone  found  in  Jarrow  (date 118), it was  Hadrian's  wish to keep "intact the empire ,"  and announce the building of the wall.  Hadrian’ s wall today
  This wall was the first of two fortifications built  across  Great Britain. The second wall was Antonine Wall, less important for us. The second wall was constructed in 142 AD by the new emperor Antoninus (after Hadrian). Antonine´s Wall was built 160 kilometers  further  in the north . Hadrian’s Wall was the  most heavily fortified border   in the Empire. The wall was used like a military fortification. Hadrian's Wall was 120 Kilometers. The wall has: small forts called  milecastles . a lot of towers called  turrets. A milecastle’s reconstrution
The soldiers who patrolled the wall lived in  barracks  in the milecastles.  In front of  Hadrian's Wall there was a  ditch , that acted as an extra defense. A road was built  behind  the wall. This road communicated all Hadrian's wall, and soldiers could move better when the enemies were quick. Roman soldier
ROMAN ROADS The Romans were good  builders . They built Hadrian's wall and other constructions in Britain. The Romans constructed a lot of roads. These roads were used by the soldiers, by the traders and travelers. The Romans built their roads  in straight lines .  Roman roads
. An important portion of the wall still exists (the mid-section). The wall can be followed on foot by  Hadrian´s Wall  Path  or  by bike  on  National Cycle Route 72 . It is the most popular  tourist  attraction in Northern England, where it is often known simply as the  Roman Wall , or  the Wall . It was made a  UNESCO   World Heritage  in 1987. English   government describes Hadrian's wall as "the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain".
