Hand hygiene, including washing with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub, is the most important way to prevent the spread of infections in healthcare settings. However, hand hygiene compliance among healthcare workers is typically low. Proper and frequent hand hygiene can reduce healthcare-associated infections, which can increase illness severity, hospital stays, disability, death, and healthcare costs. Improving access to hand hygiene supplies and promoting its importance may help increase compliance among busy healthcare workers.
