Heath Ledger was born in 1979 in Perth, Western Australia. He was an avid chess player from a young age and started acting in school plays. Ledger moved to the US in 1998 and became known for roles in 10 Things I Hate About You and Brokeback Mountain. He gained widespread acclaim for his portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Ledger was found dead in 2008 from an accidental drug overdose at age 28.
