This white paper discusses software-defined networking (SDN) and how it can be used to virtualize metro networks and services. SDN allows for programmability of network layers and network virtualization to optimize resource use, increase agility, and enable new services. Near-term drivers for carrier interest in SDN include controlling costs of metro networks and reducing time to provision services. Long-term goals include offering the network as a service (NaaS) and transforming networks similarly to virtualization in data centers.
