Viral hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver caused by viral infection. There are several types of hepatitis viruses, including hepatitis A, B, C, D, E, and others. These viruses are transmitted through food/water (hepatitis A/E) or blood/body fluids (hepatitis B/C/D) and cause acute or chronic liver infection and damage. Symptoms include jaundice and elevated liver enzymes. Some hepatitis viruses like A/E cause only acute infection while others like B/C can become chronic, increasing risk for long-term liver problems.
