Hereditary Fructose Intolerance (HFI) is a condition where the body has difficulty metabolizing fructose due to a deficiency of the enzyme fructose-1-phosphate aldolase. This causes fructose-1-phosphate to accumulate and inhibit glycogen and glucose production, potentially leading to hypoglycemia, liver failure, and death if not treated. The only treatment is a lifelong strict fructose and sucrose-free diet to avoid all sources of fructose.
