UNIT 5: A More Perfect Union

      CHECKS BALANCES

OBJECTIVE
Discuss how the 3 Branches of Government (Judicial, Legislative, and
Executive) create a checks and balances system.
History checks and balances
The U.S. Constitution reflects the principles of limited gov’t,
republicanism, checks & balances, federalism, separation of
powers, popular sovereignty, & individual rights.
LIMITED GOV’T: The Constitution & laws define the limits of those in power
so they cannot take advantage of their elected, appointed, or inherited
positions. Everyone, including all authority figures, must obey the laws.
Gov’t is restricted to what it may do.
REPUBLICANISM: A philosophy of limited gov’t with elected representatives
serving at the will of the people, gov’t is based on
      the consent of the governed.
FEDERALISM: The distribution of power between a federal
government and the states within a union. In the Constitution,
certain powers are delegated to only states, others only the federal
gov’t and others are shared powers.
POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY: Political power rests with the people who
can create, alter, and abolish gov’t. People express themselves
through voting and free participation in gov’t.
INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS: The individual rights protected in the Bill of Rights
include economic rights (related to property), political rights (freedom of
speech & press), & personal rights (bearing arms & private residences).
