Microsoft Word was first developed in 1981 and released in 1983. Over the decades, it became the dominant word processing software. Major releases included Word for Windows in 1989, Word 97 which introduced macros, Word 2007 which used the new XML file format, and Word 2013 which focused on cloud computing and document saving to OneDrive. Word has been continually updated and new versions released approximately every 3 years to keep up with changing operating systems and technologies.
