HOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA
TECHNOLOGIES IN THE
CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH,
PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?
Alex Woodworth
The meaning of “new media"
Simply, this is technology that wasn't around 40+ years ago like DSLR cameras
and software e.g. YouTube & Adobe
Software
Blogger
Blogger was used at every stage of my production to log the research that I have
found as well as showing the production work that we have completed, and the
evaluation tasks that have been done. I have used this to present all of my coursework
in one place where it has been kept neat and tidy in an organised fashion. It has
allowed me to embed certain things (Prezi slides, YouTube videos, PowerPoint etc.) so
that I don’t need to include links in a lot of my blog posts as this would be more
inconvenient and time consuming. This site is run by Google allowing users to share
with many others what ever they wish, in this case it is for my coursework for my
music video. I have learnt that using this software has allowed me to have all my work
in one place and be able to share it in many different forms and ways.
Google
I have used Google as an efficient search engine in order to gain information that we
have required whilst researching this topic. I have used Google to help me research the
hip-hop genre, as I previously had little knowledge on the background of the genre as
well as what makes a music video/song hip-hop, and to gain access to the many other
websites that I have used within planning and presenting including Blogger, Prezi and
Wordle. Blogger was used to present my work as well as keeping it all orgasnised, Prezi
was used to present certain areas of my coursework including one of the evaluation
pieces, and Wordle has been used to make my coursework more unique. Having
watched close to zero music videos, and no hip-hop videos before starting this task,
Google has helped a lot during the research period of this task.
Prezi
Prezi is an online presentation software that allows you to create a presentation
with more movement within the changing of slides. It is similar to PowerPoint
however you are given a wider variety of things that you can do on it which has
helped me to create more unique presentations to the one that I am doing
currently. Along with this it comes with a wide variety of themes that come
under many different categories, giving me a lot of options to choose from. I
have used Prezi in many slides during my blog as it stops PowerPoint from
being too overused.
YouTube
YouTube is the largest public video database website worldwide. To see conventions
of the music videos I have been able to use YouTube, as it has allowed me to find a
variety of hip-hop music videos for inspiration. YouTube was heavily used in the first
task of my blog to analyse/compare two videos from the same genre. I have used
YouTube to research music videos from the hip-hop genre which had allowed me to
collect ideas to add into my music video. YouTube was also used to upload both my
music video and my sweding video which has then been embedded onto my blog. I
have learnt that it is very easy to acquire information from YouTube, and also how
easy it would be to get noticed because any one can access your content.
Facebook Messenger
Facebook is the largest social media site on the internet and Messenger is a
separate app which allows you to keep in touch with friends from around the
world and share anything with them. This feature was proven handy in
arranging times to film and where to meet. Our arrangements can be seen on
my blog, which were made over Facebook Direct Messenger. I have learnt that
social media websites are very handy because you do not need to rely on word
of mouth to arrange events or get feedback on work and this is helpful in case
of a sudden change of events.
Adobe Photoshop
This is an advanced photo editing software that I used to create all of my
ancillary tasks. This has allowed me to give my ancillary tasks a reasonably
professional look, making the outcome as realistic as possible. This software
was complicated for me to use at the beginning as I had no idea what I was
doing however, after looking at some tutorials on YouTube I soon found out
what I needed to do in order to get the effects that I wanted. After using this
software it has made me realise that it is not difficult to make a production with
a professional look.
Adobe Premier Pro
Premier Pro is an advanced video editing software. This program pieced
together our footage for our music video in the editing stage. This program I
found very simple to use, but, as with Photoshop, I struggled to understand
how to use the software when I used it for the first time earlier in the year.
Despite this, Premier Pro has allowed me to create a hip-hip music video for
our production task.
Hardware
Camera
For some of our filming we used an SLR Camera because. Using this camera
was appealing to the audience as it allowed us to film part of our music video
in a decent standard of quality. This camera was very portable and allowed us
to do certain types of shots that we wouldn’t have been able to do with a larger
camera. Despite this the battery life of this camera wasn’t great which meant
that we had to shoot the majority of the music video using my phone.
Apple iMac
The iMacs were used for editing the ancillary tasks and piecing the music
together, with most of my work being done on one. The Adobe software ran
well on these computers with no lag issues, showing the quality of these
computers. These computers were used at every stage of production and
research and worked well with whatever I required them to do.
HP Laptop
This laptop was used at home when completing a lot of my blog, as well as the
ancillary texts that I have created. This laptop is very modern and has allowed
me to do things that wouldn't be possible with an older laptop, as this one is
also touchscreen. This has been it easier and more efficient to do certain tasks
that have been required during some of these tasks.
