About Wordpress
❖ Over 75 million websites use WordPress as a primary or secondary tool.
❖ WordPress holds over 60% market share among Content Management Systems.
Websites created using this tool are scalable, mobile responsive, search engine
friendly and most importantly fully customizable.
Key Steps
Choose a Domain
● This is the first stage of creating a website in WordPress.
● Here you need to choose the domain name smartly as it would have bearing on
SEO and brand recognition.
● Try sticking to your name or that of your business or institution that people identify
with.
● You need to choose among a range of TLDs or top-level domain that include .com,
or exclusive ones such as .info, .edu and .org, or country specific ones such as
.co.uk or .in
● A wrong hosting package can spell dooms for your site. While there are many
lucrative packages in the offering, choose one that would meet your needs.
● Does it support WordPress? Does the package support multiple domains?
● How much bandwidth and storage is being allocated?
● What percentage of up-time is being guaranteed? You need to consider these
closely before making the choice.
Choose a Hosting Package
Upload Wordpress
● In the next step download the latest version of WordPress and upload it into your
hosting account using the FTP (file transfer protocol).
● You may need to download a FTP client program for this. Once done you need to
create a database.
● This is where all your data i.e. content, configurations and user data would be
stored.
Install Wordpress
● Once you log onto your domain, WordPress would seek some additional information
to complete the installation. Here you would need to set the login id and password.
● You would receive a confirmation mail. Choose a strong login id and password to
prevent hacker from taking advantage.
Choose a Theme
● There are thousands of free and premium themes available for WordPress so take
your time in choosing a theme that meets your requirements.
● There are a few things you need to look for these include – brilliant design, valid
HTML and CSS, support, strong code base and compatibility with the latest version
of WordPress.
● Download the documentation available as it will help during customization. If you
still can’t find a good theme, you can design one in PSD and convert it into
HTML/XHTML and CSS.
Basic Configuration
● In the next step you would need to configure the basic settings of your site. Start by
activating Akismet which helps in checking spam.
● It comes in-built with WordPress. Next configure the permalinks. By default it would
be something like yoursite.com?p=232.
● You can change it to post name to make it friendly for the search engines. Next you
can disable the comments if you want to.
Secure the Site
● It is very important to secure your website as it would constantly face threats from
malicious sources.
● Keeping WordPress up-to-date, not using wp_ as the database table prefix and
removing WordPress’ version from the site header can go a long way in securing
your site.
Create Pages and Posts
● In this step you need to create all the essential pages for your site including your
Home, About Us, Contact Us page.
● You can additionally create Products and Services page and other pages.
● When you have large numbers of pages make some as parent and others as child
as this eases navigation.
● You can also post a blog and announce yourself to the world.
SEO
● Search Engine Optimization is vital for your site’s growth and hence you need to
take care of its basic SEO.
● Start by installing WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin which will take care of all your
basic needs.
● Also generate an XML sitemap that will helps search engine crawlers index your site
faster.
Backup Your Site
● The last step to back-up your site. It ensures that your site data isn’t lost in case of a
virus attack or when you are upgrading the site.
● There are a number of plugins that you can use to backup the site and these include
WP-DB-Backup, BackupBuddy and VaultPress.
● The above mentioned steps would help you create a basic WordPress site. There
are millions of ways to customize it and make it more functional. As they say, sky is
the limit with WordPress.
